I can't even comprehend it... this is just one of the 150 schools that existed. People scoffed at the word genocide being used...but what else can you call this?

Well, the TRC found that of approximately 150,000 children sent to the residential schools approximately 4,100 never made it home, so hopefully by the end of this most of those numbers will be accounted for and that there won’t be significantly more than that.

Epigenetics is definitely a thing, although we don't understand it much. That being said you're reaching for the most esoteric factor possible. Most of the damage is the emotional trauma leading to dysfunctional behaviour. Trauma in childhood is especially pervasive because it shapes the person's personality and life patterns; it's very difficult to unlearn. Then the dysfunctional behaviour perpetuates itself from one generation to the next through poor partner choice, poor parenting and poor role modelling (gambling, addiction, fighting in front of children). Just like the black community in the US, it's now a vicious cycle that will continuously perpetuate itself without any outside intervention necessary. There are no doubt many people in third-world countries who are much happier despite being in objectively worse circumstances because they didn't grow up with the toxic childhoods and toxic community that natives have grown up in.
