Another investigation of former residential school grounds has turned up hundreds of unmarked graves. Children's graves.

No numbers yet, but there will be a news conference / release later today.

More proof of what everyone already knew but the government keeps trying to cover up.

We are going to see a lot more of this as investigation into these places ramps up.

Update - 751 graves

I can't even comprehend it... this is just one of the 150 schools that existed. People scoffed at the word genocide being used...but what else can you call this?

Sad, but not surprising.

Wonder how recent the last "burial" was and if someone is going to be held accountable.

Since its the catholic church, im guessing no.

Not many details yet, but the school was open from 1899-1997...so who knows?

I think these might be makeshift Graveyards.

I don’t necessarily think these children were murdered.

Back in those Times hundreds of thousands of children died naturally due to disease without vaccinations.

Im from Africa. Back home if you survived childhood you were a winner.

If its anyone alive connected to the catholic church, watch them play musical chairs with the people responsible until they die or the whole situation is swept under the rug.

Of course. The government will also try to distance themselves from it and pin it wholly on the church.

At the same time they are fighting against residential school survivors in court.

You should read some testimonials from the TRC.

Kids were experimented on to see how little nutrition they could live on amongst other horrible things. Babies born out of rape were thrown into furnaces...

lol you act like this was ancient times or something.

As a Canadian this is disgusting and embarrassing. Don’t get me wrong. We need to know about these tragedies, and they must come to Light. The indigenous continue to be one of the most marginalized groups in Canada and steps need to be taken to remedy that. Crimes against the indigenous still happen today all around the country.

This was fairly recent.

My mother in law went to residential school.

She and her sister made it out alive, although not without a lot of trauma. Her two brothers didn't.

These schools have caused multiple generations to grow up without parents, without extended family, without their language, without their culture, with health issues.. and many other obstacles.

How recent were these atrocities occurring?

Had never even heard of residential schools until listening to the "Finding Cleo" podcast a couple weeks ago.

Crazy shit.
Kids in Canada learn about them in school now. Not when I was a kid mind you, but that's because most of them were still operating then. It is probably the most shameful aspect of Canadian history. Well, that and French being an official language.

Damn, fucked up.
I always compare it to slavery for black people in the US.
Fuck up a group of people for centuries and then wonder why they have problematic lives generations later.

It's terrible French too. But yeah this is absolutely awful and what an evil passage in your history. 1997 is not that long ago.

I'm sure I've asked before, but what tribe is she from?
