News UPDATE: Justin Thornton who was brutally KO'd at BKFC 20 last August has passed away

No doubt that it was how he spiked his head when he fell was the biggest factor here, this zero-defect idea of accountability is ridiculous. There were multiple facets that played into the outcome here, unfortunately it resulted in someone being taken far too early.

R.I.P. Justin

Just the entire way he was fighting was begging to literally get killed in the ring.
Out of shape, belly hanging out, punching in the air like a toddler with zero defense.
And he fell like an out of shape guy would. Like a sack of potatoes.
His body being so weak that it did nothing to absorb the shock of the fall.
It's almost like a bodybuilder pushing a non lifter hard and the guy falling to the floor. A young guy would suffer injuries but recover due to being young.
But an older out of shape person? They might snap their spine and not get off the floor.

You can't just step into a ring being totally out of shape. You're asking to die. People think this is a game.
Ultimately BKFC should have never let him fight. listening to Dana White, even Dana often forbids a fighter to fight due to being out of shape, and cuts them so they are retired.

RIP, yes. But this was a completely avoidable tragedy. The man almost killed himself here.

Bit of a freak accident with the way he fell. It's the risk of any combat or contact sport.

RIP

sad. he should've retired after the 10th loss. his last 5 fights before his final one were straight losses.

I'll never forget watching Lavar Johnson vs Joey Beltran live and thinking that I had witnessed a possible death. Beltran fell down in a very similar way but landed more on top of his head, wretching the neck more. What's crazy is that he fought 3 months later and won.

Pneumonia?
Perhaps there are details we dont know? not sure
It's a very serious problem for paralysis victims. Laying down for extended periods of times causes fluids to build up in the lungs. I think he was barely holding on already. Quadriplegia can prevent a person from breathing as well which probably made fighting it even more difficult. Pneumonia is actually the leading cause of death in quadriplegics.

Incredibly tragic. It looks like a freak accident though, even if they were evenly matched, landing like that while unconscious would probably do the same to anybody.

I think the biggest thing at fault you could possibly change here is the ring itself, possibly have something less stiff that won't totally compress a spine. The angle here was ugly though, it might not have taken much to break it. Kind of amazing this isn't more common.

This fight should have never been sanctioned to begin with!
BKFC are acting like backyard fight gypsies.

I get it was a mismatch, but there's nothing about the broken neck here that has to do with that outside of the KO which is a possibility in every fight regardless of skill difference. I mean you can still hold them accountable for such a ridiculous mismatch, just not really super relevant to the way he landed.

Sorry to hear the man passed away. Respect to him and best wishes for his family and loved ones.

I just watch a small gif of him rushing the guy that looks like Cuban Missile Crisis.

This was one of the reasons I didn't get into the UFC when it first started... it just seemed like the level of competition wasn't right and you'd only seem some guy get pummeled.

I've watched a few BKFC events and they are not all like that... but I don't understand what went into this match up.

I feel this an appropriate song for this situation and combat sports in general.

@TCE update the post. Cleckler just made a statement. Situation sucks all around

Sorry but this is nonsense. Have you ever trained in a boxing gym?
There's a reason why you have to wear a minimum 14oz gloves, and 16oz for heavier fighters.
The less padding & weight there is on a glove, the more power is being transfered. The ultimate damage being caused by ultralight MMA gloves or bare knuckle.
Yes the gloves do protect your hands, but above all it's about lessening damage.
I mean, with bigger gloves it's easier to kind turtle up and not being Ko'd. Especially if it's a amateur match, cuz they will stop the fight at the very first moment of the turtling. Anyways, i hope the dude is in a better place now. Rip ;/
