Somehow I missed this one, but Canadian Olympic heavyweight wrestler Arjan Bhullar had his debut amateur MMA fight last week, winning by unanimous decision. Arjan has trained with Cormier and has (obviously) a wrestling base as well as a boxing base.

I wonder if he wants to take MMA seriously and go full into the sport?

Andrew Van Zyl is fighting superstar Vandam Mbuyi on the next EFC Africa card, the winner of that fight will likely fight the winner of Walravens and Groenewald taking place in November for the EFC Africa HW championship. I'd personally like to see Groenewald vs Van Zyl happen.

After the poor performances of Ruan Potts, I expect nothing from South African fighters.

Yeah, I think there's a fairly large talent gap from that fight scene. I think Pott's fights in the UFC illustrated that well.

but Potts came in on the back end of his career and fought 2 very tough guys

He looked terrible during both those fights is the issue, it's really not like he put up a fight against either of his opponents. If he fought hard and lost it may be better, but there was just nothing there.

Pena, McLellan, and Drotschie may fare better if they get a chance at a larger show.

Trevor Prangley did pretty well in his career.

Trevor Prangley did pretty well in his career.

Prangley fought in the US and internationally right from his first pro fight, it's not so much that a fighter is from South Africa, it's just that the competition there doesn't seem to prepare guys for what they are going to face in the international fight scene.

I think if some of the guys from Africa were brought up in a higher level fight scene, they would be right up there with the best in the UFC, but the challenge level isn't pushing them to their best.

I always wondered if Prangley would open a gym and help other fighters from that area develop after he retired.

I want to see him fight Drotschie before he retires. Of every single fighter in EFC, Drotschie has the most upside.

I really want that fight too, it could be a passing of the torch. I definitely think Drotschie needs a few more fights before that though.

Pena is the guy who should get the next chance, he would give us a better sense of talent from EFC.

did mark ellis 1-1 retired from mma????

i remember he was hyped by the pro elite people to be the winner of their hw gp but they guy looked horrible vs ryan martinez and i havent heard anything from the guy since!

He's coaching college/university wrestling full time now and I haven't heard any plans of a return unfortunately. It makes me wonder if Mocco will end up in the same boat since he hasn't noted any plans to fight again either.

Tybura vs. Smoldarev at M-1 Challenge 53 in China.
I don't like this match-up.

Silly to derail one of them when both are peaking. They have Ishii and Kharitonov on the same card, I would have rather had Ishii vs Smoldarev and Kharitonov vs Tybura. You could throw Shamil in there too.

That being said, Smoldarev's takedown defense is probably one of his biggest weaknesses, so I'll take Tybura by submission.

I don't like that fight at this stage either, but losing to someone Tybura wouldn't be the end of the world. Once Tybura finishes his M-1 contract up he's UFC bound. This kid is the goods.

This month the HW division outside the UFC will be very busy.

Dave Herman v.s Walt Harris @ TFC 30

This card is full of HW fights, more or less stay busy fights for the names fighting on it. Nothing really competitive.

Jeff Monson faces the debuting Dmitry Titkov, that's a real tough fight for a debut. Even though Monson has fallen off, and looks to be at the end of his career I still wouldn't advise for anybody to face him in their debut.

Yousef Ali Mohammad is fighting on this card as well: http://www.sherdog.com/events/SHC-10-Carvalho-vs-Belo-39271

I really hope he gets a quick win so he can fight on the upcoming Superior Challenge card in November as well.
