This post is dedicated to the heavyweight prototype of the modern prospect scouting era, Guram Gugenishvili. Please see this video posted in honor of his memory. Guram's memorial video.

For previous Unsigned Heavyweights threads, please see the following links: Thread One

Due to the overall scope of the heavyweight division, and the visibility most new prospects receive as opposed to other divisions, I thought it would be interesting to post my personal list of upcoming heavyweights that could eventually make their way into a major promotion.

I've only listed fighters who have never been signed by the UFC, Pride, Strikeforce, or Bellator, with preference to fighters under 35. Factors I've taken into account when profiling fighters are: Age, camp, record, level of opposition, dedication (fight consistency and athleticism), and skill-set.

Please feel free to post your own prospects, and promote discussion of heavyweights outside major organizations in this thread to make it a continuing resource for fans and insiders alike.

1. Marcin Tybura

Height: 6'3" Weight: 248 Age: 29 Reach: N/A Rec: 12-0

Tybura was a rather unlikely prospect to ascend to the best heavyweight not fighting in a major organization. Originally heralded as an undefeated fighter with a notable split decision win over Szymon Bajor, Tybura made waves with his strength and ground fighting supremacy courtesy of a Brazilian Ju-Jitsu brown belt. As a developing striker Tybura relies on his strong takedowns and extreme physicality on the ground. Tybura has a physique very reminiscent of The Last Emperor, and while he isn't winning any body building competitions, he has excellent core strength and has shown moments of explosiveness that could become much more defining of his style the more he improves.

2. Denis Smoldarev

Height: 6'7" Weight: 261 Age: 24 Reach: N/A Rec: 9-1

Nicknamed Brock Lesnar by his peers due to his similar characteristics, Smoldarev is the largest heavyweight on the list. The comparisons to Lesnar end with appearance however, as Smoldarev hails from a striking background. Smoldarev's striking is powerful and crisp, a feature that is readily apparent in his kicks and knees, but it's his pure physicality that allows him to bully his way into favorable positions whether it be on the ground or on the feet, often causing opponents to relent early in the fight. Smoldarev could be the fighter heralded as the top heavyweight prospect in the near future, however he will need to work on his defensive wrestling and ability to overcome more durable fighters.

3. Smealinho Rama

Height: 6'0" Weight: 240 Age: 22 Reach: 74" Rec: 9-1

One of the most explosive and well rounded heavyweights on this list and also one of the youngest, Rama is an ever evolving fighter that has all the tools to make an impact on the division. Tearing through every notable Canadian heavyweight on the scene, Rama made a name for himself in Alberta's MFC promotion. Rama is versed in every aspect of the game, has excellent hips and movement, and is a natural learner. His skill-set in general is still in its youth, much as he is, and can sometimes see him overwhelmed in facets of the MMA game where others are highly disciplined. However Rama's well roundedness allows him to take the fight where he is comfortable and execute complex gameplans. His cardio seems much improved lately as he outlasted Steve Mocco's takedowns and came back strong and energetic deep into the 3rd round. Rama is a masterpiece in progress, a fighter with all the tools to become a top 10 heavyweight.

4. Denis Goltsov

Height: 6'5" Weight: 232 Age: 24 Reach: N/A Rec: 13-4

An accomplished striker and opportunistic grappler, Goltsov had a rough start to his career, earning 3 submission losses and a TKO to fellow heavyweight Alexander Volkov. Goltsov stands at a very lean 6'5, however despite his thinner frame, he carries explosive one punch knockout power. Goltsov has recently proven his losses were simply growing pains, and has compiled an impressive resume of wins over veterans and prospects alike.

5. Yosef Ali Mohammad

Height: 6'7" Weight: 250 Age: 26 Reach: N/A Rec: 4-1

Lengthy Swedish grappler Yosef Ali Mohammad is an interesting wild card that could end up being one of the best heavyweights to ever come out of Europe. Ali Mohammad is monstrously athletic for his frame and moves like a much lighter fighter. Like most European heavyweights, Ali Mohammad suffers from a lacking wrestling game, and is still obviously new to the techniques and nuances that will allow him to overcome Russian and American adversaries with strong takedowns. His ability to fly around the ring, striking at odd angles and generally doing the things lightweights are capable of makes him dangerous to anyone who can't slow down his attacks. Ali Mohammad also has a good submission game, enabling him some offense when grounded and affording him more options to finish fighters who become overwhelmed by his strikes.

6. Cody East

Height: 6'3" Weight: 241 Age: 26 Reach: N/A Rec: 9-1

The less athletic but more skilled of the two East brothers, Cody has shown to be a solid, well rounded fighter with developing cardio. Cody's boxing is the trade he peddles in MMA, and his 67% TKO ratio shows it. Training out of New Mexico, Cody has chances to train at high level camps such as Jackson/Winklejohn. Cody's entrance into a big promotion will largely depend on future victories, as his strength of competition has been an issue in determining his true ability.

7. Brandon Griffin

Height: 6'3" Weight: 232 Age: 28 Reach: N/A Rec: 4-0

What little we know about the whirlwind that is Brandon Griffin comes in less than 10 minutes of fight footage spread out amongst 7 fights. As a lighter athletically built heavyweight, Griffin holds a massive speed advantage over his often larger and slower opponents. This speed advantage is what gives Griffin the thrusters to rocket into his adversaries, bombarding them with punches, tenacious takedowns, and unrelenting ground and pound. Griffin could end up being a fast starter who looks like a world champion in the first round much like Sokoudjou in his early fighting years, or there could really be something special about the 28 year old Colorado fighter. As of now, we can only guess what Griffin's cardio, fight IQ, and ability to maintain pressure against opponents with greater fortitude will be, but if he can maintain his pace for a full 15 minutes he will undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned with.

8. Curtis Blaydes

Height: 6'4" Weight: 245 Age: 23 Reach: 83" Rec: 3-0

Heavyweight NJCAA wrestling champion Curtis "Razor" Blaydes is a rare find in the heavyweight division. With the same amateur wrestling credentials as UFC champion Jon Jones, Blaydes is a proven athlete with enormous potential. Blaydes earlier fights were showcased by strong ground and pound courtesy of his wrestling base, however more recent fights have shown Blaydes developing his striking at a rapid pace. Whether his skills will ever match his athleticism is something that will be left for time to tell, and something that we should all be watching for intently.

9. Karol Bedorf

Height: 6'2" Weight: 257 Age: 31 Reach: 78.5" Rec: 11-2

KSW's talent at heavyweight and BJJ black belt, Bedorf makes the profiles list more-so due to his consistency than any other factor. Bedorf nullifies opponents strengths and works on their weaknesses well, as displayed in his recent fights against David Olivia and Karl Knothe, stifling Olivia's wrestling attack and wearing down Knothe over 3 rounds. Aside from Francis Carmont in 2007, Bedorf has had problems when facing mid level competition, dropping bouts to journeymen Alexey Oleinik and Rogent Lloret.

10. Magomed Malikov

Height: 6'0" Weight: 235 Age: 32 Reach: N/A Rec: 7-3

Malikov has had ups and downs in his career. As a sort of perennial prospect Malikov has remained relevant and on the radar for years as he's racked up amazing wins and disappointing losses. Malikov is a stocky striker with excellent accuracy and speed fortified by solid wrestling ability. Malikov does have weaknesses in his game that have been his undoing in his two losses, the first being his submission defense, and the second his conditioning. If Malikov improves his submission defense and gets his cardio up to the point where he can go 3 full rounds while maintaining pressure and power, he will undoubtedly be a future big show acquisition.

11. Steve Mocco

Height: 6'0" Weight: 256 Age: 33 Reach: 76" Rec: 4-1

A legendary wrestler with potential that was unrealized even in his wrestling career, Steve Mocco was heralded as the next big thing in the heavyweight division. Sporting an NCAA division 1 championship and the title of Olympian, Mocco's takedowns and top game are amongst the best in the division. However unlike Cain Velasquez and Daniel Cormier, Mocco is not yet a natural at mixed martial arts. Starting off with an impressive resume, Mocco's wins became less and less decisive against even lower level competition. This foreboding performance trend finally culminated with a decision loss to surging prospect Smealinho Rama, who was able to tire Mocco and eventually take home the win through striking dominance. Many questions remain in the minds of MMA enthusiasts in regards to Steve Mocco, the forefront of which is whether he will truly begin to adapt to MMA, or will he remain solely a wrestler by nature.

12. Jan Jorgensen

Height: 6'3" Weight: 240 Age: 30 Reach: 77" Rec: 7-1

A former BYU football defensive end, Jan Jorgensen has carried over his physical and athletic capabilities into MMA. While still very raw in terms of talent, Jorgensen's cardio and wrestling make up a strong base in which he can build the remainder of his skills on. Jorgensen has been keeping busy on the regional scene the past few years, recording six quick wins over regional prospects and one decision. However a setback against fellow prospect Joshua Copeland for the RFA heavyweight strap will send Jorgensen back to the drawing board, and hopefully see him come back stronger in his next outing.

13. Michal Wlodarek

Height: 6'1" Weight: 238 Age: 30 Reach: N/A Rec: 6-0

From what little we have seen of Wlodarek over the past 3 years, the Polish heavyweight seems to carry a great deal of potential. A strong grappler and developing striker, Wlodarek has a very similar style to fellow Polish heavyweight Karol Bedorf. Wlodarek's main flaws lie within his activity and tendency for injuries, issues that will become more defining as he settles into his thirties.

14. Ante Delija

Height: 6'5" Weight: 248 Age: 24 Reach: N/A Rec: 12-2

Delija has experienced ups and downs, and perhaps his only saving grace is his age and ability to improve, whereas an older fighter may see his limit in sight. Delija combines a strong and sometimes wild striking game with brutal top control, however his bottom game and wrestling are aspects that have failed him in recent fights, dropping decisive losses to both Dion Staring and Denis Smoldarev.

15. James Mulheron

Height: 5'11" Weight: 250 Age: 25 Reach: N/A Rec: 7-0

Stocky British brawler James Mulheron pays homage to his UK predecessors in both style and appearance. Mulheron utilizes a movement heavy striking game complimented by a serviceable ground game courtesy of his training alongside former UFC heavyweight Phil Defries. Mulheron differs from his fellow UK heavyweight prospects through his strength of competition, consistently seeking out and defeating the best possible opponents in his region. Mulheron's overall ability to succeed in a large promotion will depend largely on how well he can adapt to a global level of opposition, more specifically some of the larger, faster US and Russian heavyweight prospects flooding the UFC's and Bellator's ranks. Regardless Mulheron has cleaned out the UK of available opposition and deserves his chance at taking on greater challenges.

16. Zelimkhan Umiev

Height: 6'5" Weight: 240 Age: 32 Reach: N/A Rec: 5-0

Zelimkhan Umiev came into MMA with years of equivalent experience sporting a well established combat sambo background, a discipline that simulates many aspects of MMA. Umiev is a tenacious fighter who constantly looks for the finish, often overwhelming opponents with his pressure and aggression, traits that have become signature of his style. Nearing his mid thirties Umiev will have to be on a fast track in MMA and thus far his schedule and level of opposition has been reflective of that, fighting once a month for 4 months to win the ACB heavyweight tournament and capping off his 2014 with a big win over tough polish journeyman Jacek Czajczynski. If Umiev keeps an active schedule and continues to best strong opposition he will quickly find himself courting offers from larger promotions.

17. Francis Ngannou

Height: 6'4" Weight: 250 Age: 28 Reach: N/A Rec: 4-1

Francis Ngannou may not turn out to be the next big thing at heavyweight, however his brutal and violent fighting style will certainly earn him many fans regardless of his current level of ability. Ngannou is a precise and technical striker with a penchant for doing damage, often toppling opponents with devastating punches and kicks. While Ngannou sports a kickboxing background, he also has an opportunistic submission game, setting up quick submissions after rocking his opponents or taking the fight to the ground when outmatched on the feet. Ngannou's hurdles will be overcoming the MMA rule-set in France which disallows strikes on the ground, and more specifically fighters with strong clinch and grappling backgrounds who can stifle his aggression or take the fight to the floor.

18. Dmitry Smolyakov

Height: 6'2" Weight: 265 Age: 31 Reach: N/A Rec: 6-0

A large and powerful Russian wrestler, Smolyakov is the definition of a brute force fighter. While Smolyakov's technique is still extremely raw, he has the advantage of simply willing finishes with his power and tenacity. Smolyakov slams, wrenches, and pounds out his opponents, who have been unable to answer his ability to brutally stop fights. Smolyakov's striking is still a weak point and he has looked stiff on the feet, which could be a large disadvantage should he encounter an opponent who can either match his physical strength or stay noticeably faster standing.

19. Murad Izmailov

Height: 6'5" Weight: 259 Age: 28 Reach: N/A Rec: 4-0

Another of the throng of Russian combat sambo competitors turned MMA fighters, Izmailov looks to follow the path of fellow sambist Vitaly Minakov. While still relatively new in MMA, Izmailov's combat sambo experience has proven to be an adequate substitute in the transition to professional fighting. Ismailov looks to be experienced beyond his fighting years, and displays a well rounded game with a focus on submissions. Izmailov's fights bear a resemblance to Vitaly Minakov's early competitions, and he would be well suited to follow in Minakov's path by pairing with a higher level fight team in order to maximize his development.

20. Tom Aspinall

Height: 6'2" Weight: 240 Age: 20 Reach: N/A Rec: 1-0

When we think of British heavyweights, we can't help but conjure up images of stocky fighters throwing wild punches with their trademark brawling style. Tom Aspinall however is one of the exceptions. Much like fellow British grappler Phil Defries, Aspinall sports a strong BJJ background, one that is honed and perfected by his father, a lifelong BJJ practitioner. While similar in ground fighting ability the comparisons to Phil Defries end there. Aspinall is the first of a new generation of British heavyweights who finally have a complete and technical mixed martial arts game. An amateur MMA fighter since 16 and a fighter that literally grew up as a mixed martial artist, Aspinall has the size, the power, the speed, the grappling, and the striking to win the fight in any position. While Aspinall's striking is his weakest point he is still leagues above most other heavyweights in the UK. Aspinall is 10-0 as an amateur, and is embarking on a professional career that could see him land in a large promotion within a few years.

Honorable Mentions (Sorted alphabetically by first name): Adam Milstead, Allen Crowder, Arjan Bhullar, Chaban Ka, Chi Lewis Parry, Dakota Merritt, Dillon Cleckler, Junior Albini, Tanner Boser

sad to see such a legendary thread end, all good things must come to and end I guess :icon_cry2

Good list. Some others that i've been keeping an eye on.

Stjepan Bekavac (16-4) (just KO'd Eddie Sanchez)
Chris Barnett (9-1) he's always dangerous, just needs opponents at 265.
Azunna Anyanwu (7-2) CFFC HW Champion
John Johnston (6-0) CES HW Champion
Andrew van zyl (9-2) Top EFC Africa HW
Chris de la Rocha (3-0) Recent win over HW journeyman DJ Linderman
Chaban Ka (8-3-1) M-1 fighter with wins over Alexei Kudin and Jeff Monson
Mikhail Gazaev (3-0) M-1 Prospect
Seante Williams (2-0) Showdown Fights fighter, former NFL player. Two TKOs in first two fights.
Denny Houle (5-0) Canadian HW prospect
Tim Johnson (7-1) Dakota FC HW champion, quick submission of Bellator vet Kevin Asplund in last fight.
Andy Gonzalez (4-0) Mexican HW Prospect
Chaz Morgan (7-0) Fights Super HW, could cut. 6 KO wins.
Igor Subora (5-1) Ukrainian Heavyweight based in Asia, just signed with One FC.
Chris Lokteff (12-2) One FC Heavyweight with win over Tony Johnson. Fell to James McSweeney in last fight though.
Paul Cheng (5-1) Canadian Heavyweight based in Taiwan. 2-0 in One FC, age working against him at 35.
Chi Lewis Parry (6-0) Undefeated British HW fighting for One FC.
Bryc Palmer (10-1) Alaskan Heavyweight with 10 finishes on his resume. Hasn't fought in nearly 18 months. Palmer vs. Jared Cannonier in Alaska would be huge.
Salvador Sanchez (8-0) - Utah based Heavyweight with 7 finishes. Was supposed to fight Jan Jorgensen earlier in the year but got injured.
Adrian Henderson (5-0) Win over Robert Neal who won over Bellator fighter Mike Wessel
Robert Neal (2-1) Win over Mike Wessel.

For the new thread I've also merged my amateurs post to keep things in one area. I will continue to update this post as well with my personal list of top amateurs in heavyweight MMA. Any fighters that become professionals will be removed, and new fighters will be added to keep an up to date top 5 list that strives to pick the needles from the heavyweight amateur haystack.

1. Scott Steele

Height: 6'3" Weight: 230 Age: 28 Region: CA Amateur Rec: 4-0

Olympic alternate for Steve Mocco, Scott Steele's level of athleticism is nearly unsurpassed. Steele is an agile fighter with nearly unstoppable takedowns, and is only getting better courtesy of a training camp at Team Quest. Steele's record is filled with fighters from the California amateur scene, one of the toughest amateur scenes in the world. The deeper one looks into Steele's MMA footage the more they will see a fighter who can imagine a technique, and simply due to his well honed instincts and incredible athletic pedigree, execute it with little to no prior instruction. Steele's signature back flip after his fights is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his ability as an athlete and as a fighter.

2. Steve Mowry

Height: 6'9" Weight: 230 Age: 22 Region: PA Amateur Rec: 6-0

Stefan Struve doesn't have to feel lonely at the top anymore, 6'9 heavyweight Steve Mowry is only a few inches off from being one of the tallest still active MMA fighters in the world. Not only is Mowry tall, but he is the best pure fighter on this list. Sporting a Golden Gloves state championship and a medal at the IBJJF No-Gi Worlds, Mowry's amateur combat sports experience is almost unheard of since Stipe Miocic's D1 wrestling and golden gloves boxing credentials wowed prospect scouts. Mowry's game is what you would expect, a lengthy striker that utilizes his jab and a tricky BJJ wizard who slides into dominant positions and threatens with long limbs at every second of the fight. If there was a sure bet for a fighter that will find success as a pro, Mowry and his ability to be a mixed martial artist above all is the iconification of it.

3. Jahsua Marsh

Height: 6'3" Weight: 238 Age: 24 Region: NE Amateur Rec: 4-1

NAIA 197 pound national champion Jahsua Marsh has been reborn as a heavyweight in MMA. Starting his amateur career as a light heavyweight, Marsh had many issues relating to an extreme weight cut of 35 pounds. Now in his mid twenties, Marsh has grown into a heavyweight frame. Athleticism and wrestling credentials drive Marsh's developing MMA skillset, and should he continue to evolve in the amateurs and rely less on his wrestling and more on a well rounded skill-set, he will certainly see a great deal of success when he transitions into professional fights.

4. Roger McCovey

Height: 6'2" Weight: 240 Age: 24 Region: CA Amateur Rec: 2-0

A California state champion and 2nd place NJCAA finisher, McCovey is an exceptional athlete and a quick study in MMA. With an NJCAA run that was only spoiled by now famed wrestler Tyrell Fortune, McCovey would have been a NJCAA champion had Fortune competed in the NCAA's. McCovey is a wild fighter that sometimes throws down on the feet despite his obvious ground advantage, however when he does take the fight to the ground, it is often quick and brutal. McCovey is the only fighter on this list that may make a move to LHW eventually, however his success at HW thus far has been excellent.

5. J.D. Ramsey

Height: 6'4" Weight: 255 Age: 25 Region: OH Amateur Rec: 4-1

A former NCAA Division 2 wrestler placing 8th in 2012, Ramsey is a big powerful wrestler with a suffocating ground game. Still mostly a wrestler by trade, Ramsey has fallen to his roots in recent fights, punishing his opponents with dominating ground supremacy. Ramsey still needs time to hone his striking and submission abilities in order to become a complete mixed martial artist, however his raw athleticism and wrestling skill alone can carry him a long way in the heavyweight landscape, both amateur and pro.

Inactives and Honorable Mentions (Sorted alphabetically by first name): Amir Lacy, Chris Lafantasie, Christian Anderson, Dontale Mayes, Jason Windham, Ryan Swanson, Wade Sauer, Wessel Mostert

Good list. Some others that i've been keeping an eye on.

Tim Johnson, Azunna Anyanwu, and Chi Lewis Parry are all close to popping up on my honorables. I'd like to see Johnson fight Wiuff since they both fight on the same events, Anyanwu could use a win or two more since he had some really bad losses, and Parry should fight Igor Subora or another OneFC HW without a losing record.

Anyone know more about de la Rocha? At only 3-0 a win over Linderman is respectable.

Anyone know more about de la Rocha? At only 3-0 a win over Linderman is respectable.

He's almost 36, fought in FCFF amateurs for a bit and compiled a 3-0 record there. Not overly impressed, I think Linderman isn't coming in to fight anymore to be honest.

Saw in the last thread that Tony Johnson wants to fight Phil DeFries in One. I think Phil would be an awesome addition to that weight class, and that's an awesome fight.

Phil De fries and Oli Thompson would be good

Honorable Mentions (Sorted alphabetically by first name): Allen Crowder, Brendan Barrett, Christian Colombo, Curtis Blaydes, Damian Grabowski*, Dillion Cleckler, Gzim Selmani, James Mulheron, Magomed Malikov, Seante Williams, Wade Sauer

* Damian Grabowski is relegated to the mentions list due to fighting in a Bellator tournament.

Wow I haven't seen Barrett's name in forever. Last I heard of him he was a 3-5 nobody. I'm quite surprised he's on a 6 fight winning streak.

Wow I haven't seen Barrett's name in forever. Last I heard of him he was a 3-5 nobody. I'm quite surprised he's on a 6 fight winning streak.

He's had a decent run the past two years, although I'd like to see him fight up a level and take on a higher level prospect or a veteran.

According to the EFC Africa site, Christophe Walravens will be fighting Brendon Groenewald for the vacant heavyweight title. I'm guessing Andrew Van Zyl will fight the winner.

Manuel Quezada (2-0) vs. Josue Lugo (3-1) is happening at Tachi Palace Fights 20 on August 7th. Worth keeping an eye on.

Also, Fernando Rodrigues is fighting Alison Vicente (12-11) at Talent MMA Circuit 10 on August 9th.
