Unsigned Heavyweights - Thread Three

Daniel James moves to 5-1 with a quick submission of journeyman, Patrick Harman.

James is active but needs to be fighting better opposition to prove he deserves a shot in a big promotion.

Denis Goltsov vs Fedor NYE. Needs to happen. Fedor killed Ishii's hype train. Goltsov is next.

2 reasons I don't see this happening...

1) Goltsov turned down the UFC coz he didn't feel he was ready, skill-wise. If he doesn't fancy Anthony Hamilton or Timothy Johnson right now, he certainly doesn't want a piece of fucking Fedor Emelianenko!

2) Sakakibara. The man is a showman and he won't have Fedor fight someone very few MMA fans know about. It's gonna be a veteran, someone with some kind of name value/recognition, to get the casual fans tuning in/remembering who the dude is. Brett Rogers II, I guarantee it. Rogers is fucking whoring himself out these days, getting KO'd in Russia every other weekend and being billed as the 'big black monster' - Japanese crowds LOVE this and it's a nice tune-up for Fedor to shake off the ring-rust.

If not Rogers, I'd wager someone like Ishii II (Sigh) or Geronimo Dos Santos. Someone we'd hope it wouldnt be, basically.

I agree! I think is going to be fedor vs Rogers 2

What y'all think of the Dan Charles vs Chase Gormley fight?

Gormley was stubborn and didn't use his wrestling. He stood up and got lit up when the path to victory was fairly clear with Charles. Next time he needs to work on his gameplan and I think he'll perform better.

Make no sense.
UFC should pick up younger HWs like Goltsov, Pavlovich, Blaydes.

I like it, he's gotten some good wins recently and it's now or never. I do agree they should sign the young guys too though.

I'd prefer them to start building young guys too. Although Danho is only 31, I'm just glad Joe Silva isn't wasting roster space on signing guys who are over 35, which he has a habit of doing.

EFC spoiler:

Cyril Asker defeats Andrew Van Zyl by choke. Van Zyl's problematic submission defense rears its head again. If Asker can defend against the winner of Kowalkowski and Groenewald, he may be looking at a contract in a larger show. I personally still think he's an overweight LHW though.

Who you got top 10 including all orgs outside ufc?

This was tougher than I anticipated. Ranking guys as they are right now and not considering potential, this is what I came up with. The only name in there I think could probably be higher or lower is Tony Johnson, I wasn't sure where to put him since I think he would lose a rematch against Volkov.

1. Fedor
2. Vitaly Minakov
3. Sergei Kharitonov
4. Kongo
5. Alexander Volkov
6. Blagoi Ivanov
7. Tony Johnson
8. Marcin Tybura
9. Denis Smoldarev
10. Denis Goltsov

I get what you're saying but I disagree with it. Sure I'd love young talent but I don't think age should be much of a factor in signing for the UFC. If a guy does good enough he should be signed even if he's 42. Never heard of Danho though, what do you think of him? He any good?

man id love to see Sergei fuck shit up @ either WSOF or Bellator

Danho - glad to see more HWs signed up, but don't expect much from him really. Brawler, he'll probably go 0-2 and get cut unless he gets really green fellow newcomers.

Asker - yes, Paul, definitely a LHW.

I'm more looking into the long term for signings in the division, because in 5 years all these guys are going to be retired, and there needs to be new, younger stars to replace them.

We're getting into the point of no return in a couple years, when they will be forced to start developing young guys if they want the division to survive into the 2020's, and I'm all about starting that process now, rather than waiting until the last minute.

Right now they got Makhov, I'd like to see Blaydes and Aliakbari get added soon, because those three and Tyrell Fortune (who Bellator signed) are the best prospects they've had available in many years. Those would be the forward thinking signings I'm looking for. You could add Sergey Pavlovich in there too.

In terms of Danho, he hits like a truck and has some cardio, so those are two big advantages. I think he's a good add to match up against new guys, you could probably put him in with Walt Harris or Chris De La Rocha off the bat.

Fair enough, I'm all about getting young dudes in there I just think the old guys who are good deserve it too. Magomedov is a good young talent for the division and I think he's top 10 right now. Only 28 so that's pretty young there. A division will never "die" they all kind of just have ups and downs. Right now I honestly think is an up but UFC ruined it with Velasquez/Werdum 2.

I love Ruslan Magomedov, honestly it's a treat watching him fight, he fights like a middleweight, even if he doesn't have that finishing instinct yet. Just seeing a guy that big work with that much technique is such a rarity. Pavlovich is a lot like that too, except with more power.

And yeah, Cain/Werdum is a stupid rematch after what Werdum did to him.
