We've just had the press conference for this Saturday's UFC on Fox but Dana decides that is the time to announce Ronda Rousey's headlining fight with Liz Carmouche at February's UFC 157 and GSP will fight Nick Diaz next and not Silva or Hendricks.

Surely it's incredibly obvious that the result is the majority will now be talking about GSP, some will concentrate on Rousey whilst even fewer will be getting hyped up about this weekend's card.

What on earth is the thought process behind the timing of these announcements? Anyone?

I couldn't agree more about the horrible timing of these announcements. As if they couldn't hold a separate conference to promote the UFC 157.

Look how they handled UFC 154. The theoretical GSP/Silva match and promotion completely overshadowed the entire event.

Yep, this isn't the first time they've deflected all attention from an upcoming card. Week leading up to a big card should be nothing but info/hype for that card. You announce the GSP/Rousey stuff during quiet times. No reason whatsoever this couldn't have waited til early next week.

would have thought it was pretty damn obvious!

the whole premise behind the free cards is to sell future PPV's - something that puts real $$$ in the UFC's pockets.

This is done both directly, and indirectly. Hardly a shocking turn of events!

LOL!

This isn't the WWE, take a look at the bigger picture and stop living from PPV to PPV

When you don't promote what you got, in lieu of something you might not get (and in this case, didn't get), I dunno, it kind of makes the fights feel less important, you know? There's a time and place for everything, so why pick on the cusp of or night of an event to take the spotlight away from what's actually happening?

uhm the Fox card has already received it's promotion. Fox and the Ufc pushed it very hard and now that it's winding down it's time to start pushing another card.

How can anyone not understand this?

They always do that and it works, so I don't understand your point.

Odd that they would steal the thunder from what is an outstanding Fox card with news that didn't have to be said today. Dana though we know can't control himself.

why would they possibly use a big stage to promote future events?

Nailed it.

The premise of the free cards is to get as many people as possible to watch them. The UFC are failing miserably at it, and this is an example of why.

Nobody on earth will watch the UFC on Fox card because of the GSP announcement.

The UFC's viewing figures are plummeting and it's their failing promotional activity that is playing a large part.

Are you seriously suggesting the UFC should wind down promotional activity in the two days before an event? That's befuddling.

It might make the fight seem less important

but it makes the fighter seem more important
