Here, in NZ, basic is/was 4 months then you get to choose a specialization or to leave.They didn't want to pay to train up people in specalisations who would then leave. It's not like the us, we don't have a standing army. The only unit that sees action is the special forces and (i think) some infastructure personal, neither of which interested me. I was 19, and army wasn't for me at the point in the 90s. I signed up because my great great grandad died in ww1 when the 4th stormed Gallipoli and my great-grandad died as part of the maori battalion (he died in africa). I come from a military family (sort of) and it was expected of my generation to show respect for my ancestors by thinking about thier sacrifices.

Neither are Disney or ESPN. They are corporations. They are on the shareholders side. If you saw correaltive data that demonstrated Trump appearances were causing significant bottom line loss, you wouldn't see Trump at events anymore. Not in the same way (nobody should not be allowed to buy a ticket, obviously exceptions aside). If those changes were not made executive's get fired.

I don't know what the discussions about political appearances at espn are but I guarantee that the question they always go back to is, how does this impact our bottom line. Corporations are only political (in general) in a capitialist sense. Unfortunately news media is the same now. You see it as presenting political views, they see it as making money out of thier viewer base. Influnecers are no different. Google grift drift for an interesting insight into how this all works. You can apply that to entertainment media too (by snd large).

The idea that these corporations are on the left simply isn't true, it's a myth spread by angry online influencers and news Corp because it gets them click from, mainly, teenage boys (data shows this btw, the teenage boy bit and people like the quaertering, tate, sargon, geeks and gamers, etc).

Im am. I write about it as a job now (not for the money, i earn very little writing) I also lived there for years.

I stay away from NZ politics because I have too many old friends that work in government and news media, plus I kind of find it cuts too close to the bone.

I feel more distant from US politics and more objective, if that makes sense.

I write about English politics too, just in a less granular manner.

Just to add more, if you are interested. Something most Americans (I don't mean you) don't think about (most Americans don't actually think about politics much) is that US politics affects the entire world. Since the end of WW2, NZ has by and large been downstream of American politics both in policy and messaging. That linesl is even blurrier now. Because of the way that the internet has removed physical location in regards to where and with who people spend thier time, the huge torrent of political proganda aimed at the American public now almost equally drowns us too. We get the same stuff you guys do. I see people wearing Maga caps at the supermarket all the time "I usually ask them "why would you wear thst, you can't vote" and they look at me then leave. Mainly they do it to try and pick an argument.

So even if I wanted to write in the areas of politics I do (I'm mainly interested in long form pieces that trace the ideological heritage of currently plaformed ideas) about NZ only, I'd still need at least a decent grasp of us politics and policy. It's sort of unavoidable.
