Makes me wonder what the hell they are thinking to release him?
I wasn't a big fan of cutting Volkmann or Fitch, but in context I could see an honest argument for releasing both of them. In addition to key losses they were both somewhat 'problem' guys for their employers and I respect the UFC wanting to run the company their way.
There is no reasonable way to explain cutting Yushin Okami. He's legitimately top 10 in the world and recently beat two high profile guys in Lombard and Belcher. Pretty much zero doubt he can beat nearly all of the guys signed to MW, and split wins and losses if he fought the entire top 5 in succession, right now.
He doesn't have an exorbitant pay schema like Overeem or Lombard. Unlike Fitch and Volkmann he's been a loyal company man for years. I really want to say the UFC isn't cutting guys based on their fighting style alone... but this is so over the top I don't know how else to define it. How do you explain this?
It's mind blowing they want someone as legitimately talented and high profile as Yushin Okami fighting for the competition.
this is not true. okami had a lot of fans here. take a look at threads for previous okami fights. okami always had respect from many on sherdog.I swear to god nobody gave any shits about Okami yesterday. Now everyone loves the guy.
That's what doesn't make sense.
You corrupt that credibility by telling the competitors how to fight.
It not hard to understand.
Dana has invented his own martial art, and thats what we are watching now.
there has got to be more we don't know about

If I remember correctly, he made Egan Inoue not answer the bell, arm triangled Robbie Lawler, survived Niko Vitale's RNC then RNC'd him, gave Jacare a challenge in the DREAM MWGP when Jacare was subbing guys quickly and easily, easily smoked Katsuyori Shibata where I'm assuming any skilled guy should be able to do. Gauging a fighter based on a limited sample size isn't really an accurate assessment. If he was such a crap fighter, I doubt fight teams like Hendo's Team Quest, Munoz's Reign, Punishment w/Tito & Rampage, Cordeiro's King's MMA would have him around.
Fitch went on to lose in his next promotion, I think it was justified.

In fairness,
Okami always made interesting fights in terms of providing a good marker for where a potential contender stands.
He would have been a good opponent for the likes of Tim Kennedy, Bisping or even Machida at MW.
