UFC releases Yushin Okami

42/42K for his last FIVE FIGHTS. Common Zuffa.

You have a monopoly over MMA. Give it some legitimacy by not cutting the #6 ranked MW according to your own rankings.

he's a top 10 guy on a one fight losing streak
bullshit
he's the only japanese start they hav

Good. About time I say, one of the most boring fighters I've ever seen. He was only entertaining when he got smashed

I wasn't a big fan of cutting Volkmann or Fitch, but in context I could see an honest argument for releasing both of them. In addition to key losses they were both somewhat 'problem' guys for their employers and I respect the UFC wanting to run the company their way.

There is no reasonable way to explain cutting Yushin Okami. He's legitimately top 10 in the world and recently beat two high profile guys in Lombard and Belcher. Pretty much zero doubt he can beat nearly all of the guys signed to MW, and split wins and losses if he fought the entire top 5 in succession, right now.

He doesn't have an exorbitant pay schema like Overeem or Lombard. Unlike Fitch and Volkmann he's been a loyal company man for years. I really want to say the UFC isn't cutting guys based on their fighting style alone... but this is so over the top I don't know how else to define it. How do you explain this?

It's mind blowing they want someone as legitimately talented and high profile as Yushin Okami fighting for the competition.

Fitch went on to lose in his next promotion, I think it was justified.

just goes to show having the skills to be the in top 10 is not enough. You have to either win/lose in exciting fashion, or have an out of the octagon persona that keeps people interested.

I swear to god nobody gave any shits about Okami yesterday. Now everyone loves the guy.

That's what doesn't make sense.
this is not true. okami had a lot of fans here. take a look at threads for previous okami fights. okami always had respect from many on sherdog.

Wow, the UFC is starting to go crazy... if Bellator were smart, they would snatch up Okami fast...

I think this promotion is becoming increasingly anti-grappler... if I wanted to watch kickboxing, I would watch GLORY.

You corrupt that credibility by telling the competitors how to fight.

It not hard to understand.

Dana has invented his own martial art, and thats what we are watching now.

Why do people not understand that it is a business (always has been, always will be). Okami doesn't put butts in the seats. Okami doesn't sell PPVs. Okami is aging and has had his chances at a title. The chances of him climbing the ladder to a title are slim. He's expendable. Every fighter in any organization should understand that their job is to get people interested in watching them fight. This is the reality of the fight business, its not a Zuffa/Dana conspiracy.

Technically, he didn't deserve to get cut.

However, do i care?

Did he bring any additional PPV buys?

You know the answers are emphatic NO's, and that's the problem.

THe only Okami fights i remotely enjoyed were the one's he got beat up in. Be honest, almost everyone feels the same. He makes Fitch look like the most exciting man in sports entertainment!!!

I guess the UFC is not about having the best fighters in the world, just the most entertaining ones.
Dana is trying to influence fighting styles with the cuts like okami and fitch

You are right, personally i was not a fan or a follower, but he was not bad, he had my respect. What i cant stand is the unfair treatment hes getting. There are many fighters in the UFC that should be cut already and still have superstar treatment. This is wrong in so many levels

If I remember correctly, he made Egan Inoue not answer the bell, arm triangled Robbie Lawler, survived Niko Vitale's RNC then RNC'd him, gave Jacare a challenge in the DREAM MWGP when Jacare was subbing guys quickly and easily, easily smoked Katsuyori Shibata where I'm assuming any skilled guy should be able to do. Gauging a fighter based on a limited sample size isn't really an accurate assessment. If he was such a crap fighter, I doubt fight teams like Hendo's Team Quest, Munoz's Reign, Punishment w/Tito & Rampage, Cordeiro's King's MMA would have him around.

Which is why is i said "not a very good fighter". A good, or at least solid, fighter though and i'm aware of his achievements. You left out how close he was to subbing Shields and the fact that he went 50 minute on the ground with Jacare and Shields without getting subbed says a lot about his BJJ. I wouldn't say he gave Jacare much of a challenge tbh, he was mostly defending subs iirc.

The following he had was not proportional to his skills as fighter though and i think you're aware of that. Imagine Mayhem with the exact the same record minus the MTV persona. How much love would that fighter get and from how many?

Fitch went on to lose in his next promotion, I think it was justified.

Yet Fitch beat Erik Silva who everybody was anointing as the Christ of WW not even a full year before he lost outside the UFC. The UFC does NOT have all the best fighters.

In fairness,

Okami always made interesting fights in terms of providing a good marker for where a potential contender stands.

He would have been a good opponent for the likes of Tim Kennedy, Bisping or even Machida at MW.

I usually defend Zuffa...

But this time...

Zuffa can go cuss themselves. Zuffa can cuss a cuss, and while they're at it, they can cuss every cuss of everybody they ever meet. CUSS!

I really wanted to see Okami vs Machida, or Okami vs Mousasi.
