UFC releases Yushin Okami

515 Followers and his last retweet was March...

Yeah, that's the proper way of ranking a fighter. Okami is a known face to those who follow the UFC, the dude has been a perennial contender for years ffs. He should've worked more on his Twitter skills and less on winning fights though.

Man, they are going a bit extreme with this one.

Carmont must have shit his pants when he heard the news.

I dislike Okami but this is a bad cut. He does a job, causes no problems and is a solid middleweight. Maybe he'd hit a wall, but he's still a good guy to have on the books, I disagree with the cut.

I'm not saying he should have been cut, it's retarded to cut a top 5/10 MW who was on a winning streak over two top 10 opponents.

But you can't deny is crazy how little name value he appears to have being a top 10 fighter in the number 1 org for 7 years.

Dude has headlined PPVs and nobody either knows or cares.

Im actually genuinely laughing at how crazy this cut was.

I feel bad for Okami.

I feel bad for the sport.

I actually kind of feel bad for the UFC.

We all think we are following a legit sport.

We all do.

And we still are kind of, but they are bleeding credibility all over the place.

GSP fights no differently than Okami the two are very alike style wise. You might as well cut every wrestler out there while you're at it you fuckers!

This. Just like Fitch, he couldn't beat the champ, but could beat most of the contenders, and he created a stalemate in the division. A boring stalemate.

Good riddance Yushin. Become an entertainer and maybe you'll be back.

This is what I believe is the biggest reason he was cut in combination with his fighting style. I don't think the money they had to pay him was the biggest factor. Basically, he was too consistently good against MWs who were not truly elite, yet, he was not good enough himself to be a serious title contender. So all he'd end up doing is squashing guys who could otherwise eventually be promoted as title contenders (even if they really weren't). That doesn't do the UFC any good. The UFC needs a constant flow of guys who can be hyped up at some point and later forgotten about. Okami was working against their interests by being so consistent in winning against mid to upper-mid level opposition.

Your points would be fine if MMAMath worked.

Just because Okami can beat someone, doesn't mean they should never get a title shot. It's not like they HAVE to have a up and comer fight Okami. They can just schedule around him. Weidman hasn't beat Okami, so I guess Weidman must be a "stomp" fighter?

Boring fighters who make a lot of money but bring little to no fanbase will not have jobs with the UFC. It's that simple. It doesn't change the sport at all, especially with guys like Fitch and Okami who have had chances and failed.

off subject but damn you've been too soo many events! lol
surprised theres no bellator events on there :P

Yea Im not really a fan of Okami's style, but this is bullshit. He beats a lot of MWs on their roster. Actually thats why they're getting rid of him I guess. I've long stopped pretending that this is a sport, but still shit like this bothers me a bit sometimes.

Sorry for the sarcasm then. I find it sad that name value should mean so much, if a fighter wins fights he should stay, period. Isn't it crazy that a scandal, say a drunken brawl, or random call outs of other fighters possibly could've secured his place in the company.

@ this point, I dont care, Zuffa is fkng stupid for letting Okami go, Okami is a fantastic fighter.

Its funny how much Dana was ridiculing Pride FC for having circus act matches, yet now he realizes that's what majority of north american fans find entertaining. I dont care which way he decides to go, but be real about it.

He tried marketing a product to an American audience with a judging criteria that favored the most popular American martial art. FOX knows their audience, they know they wanna see guys like Pettis kicking livers into pulp, and guys KOing people. Fitch and Okami were the start, expect the product to change a lot in next few years.

If he signs with Bellagor, guess I will start watching Bellagor. First Fitsch now Oami. Bullshit. UFC too aggressive releasing fighters

I wasn't a big fan of cutting Volkmann or Fitch, but in context I could see an honest argument for releasing both of them. In addition to key losses they were both somewhat 'problem' guys for their employers and I respect the UFC wanting to run the company their way.

There is no reasonable way to explain cutting Yushin Okami. He's legitimately top 10 in the world and recently beat two high profile guys in Lombard and Belcher. Pretty much zero doubt he can beat nearly all of the guys signed to MW, and split wins and losses if he fought the entire top 5 in succession, right now.

He doesn't have an exorbitant pay schema like Overeem or Lombard. Unlike Fitch and Volkmann he's been a loyal company man for years. I really want to say the UFC isn't cutting guys based on their fighting style alone... but this is so over the top I don't know how else to define it. How do you explain this?

It's mind blowing they want someone as legitimately talented and high profile as Yushin Okami fighting for the competition.

I guess that the UFC is throwing in the towel on Japan..
