I'm sure I have a bias because I come from a "fine art" and illustration background (not trying to be pretentious, I'm just not sure what else to call it). Not a tattoo connoisseur by any means.
Poorly drawn figures are something that I really don't enjoy. The gladiators are poorly drawn, the anatomy and modelling is off which makes the figures look amateurish. The spiraling architecture is an interesting idea, the rest I don't like. I also find the whole thing busy and disorganized. I'm sure there are constraints with what you can do in a tattoo, but I compare that in my mind with the level of drawing of someone like Frank Frazetta, or a good comic book artist like David Finch or Jim Lee.
Not that I would ever tattoo Frazetta on myself or that this is amazing, but it's much better. Just giving a reference for an artist in fantasy art.
I also find the overall theme pretty corny, but that's just my personal taste. The little monsters at the bottom are so bad and silly to me.
The Conor tattoo is more a matter of me not liking the design and not finding it aesthetically pleasing, but I don't think it's so badly done within its style, so it's more subjective. It took me a long time to understand what the hell is coming out of the gorilla's mouth, and I'm still not quite sure lol.
That's fair and i guess i agree on all accounts, from what i can tell now.
What you mentioned in the initial comment is particularly important to me: the contrast (or lack of it). From my experience more contrast (and thus depth) is really what can make (or in super, super seldom cases, break) a tattoo - like there are some tattooers who make great linework and have motives that are pretty cool, but then they choose colors which makes the tattoo very like one shape and "un-three-dimensional", so to speak.
Interesting, i didn't know Jim Lee and David Finch, but i their comic work/style seems very familiar to me and i like their style, tbh.
Cool that you mention Frank Frazetta, the guy has gone off my radar after i wanted to remember his name when i first saw the following piece of art:
Shit, this looks so good. Only thing - but that's more of a taste question - that irks me a bit is the style of faces he chose here; Cleopatra looks a bit too "manga-esque" in her face to me, if that makes sense, lol.
In terms of tattoo artists, i'm a massive fan of Teresa Sharpe:
Hope i don't get yellow-carded for this one, but technically it ain't nudity, lol:
I love everything about her style; not only are her motives very cleanly done, but they also look so vivid to me... i like her choice of colors too, i must say.
Love this guys work too:
Okay, three more tattoo artists, otherwise i'll fill pages with my stuff again lmao:

When it comes to drawn or painted art, i enjoy many artists as well, here are *some* favourites:

Simone Bianchi:

Overall i like a ton of stuff, but especially the "darker" and more macabre stuff, color-wise i enjoy everything i guess, lol.
BTW, that Frazetta piece where the polar bears pull the sled with the barbarian is mega badass. I like that as a tattoo it has shades of pink due to the skin; harmonizes greatly with the light blue imo.
