Not sure I like 205 for Izzy. He's really lean.

Not like he got completely outclassed today. He got cracked with a big punch early on the 2nd after winning the 1st. It's fighting. Shit happens. Izzy looked good, Imavov just landed a great shot and just as importantly immediately landed a great follow up shot. That left hand following the knockdown was the real kill shot. Izzy may have been able to recover had that one not connected.

Heavyweight at least had a time where it could have been argued as the best division in MMA. Middleweight was made because of dorks like Frank Shamrock, another dude who was a good fighter but looked at as more than he was.

The skills are there, but the chin isn't. Sadly I think Volk is in the same boat.

It's just that time for both of their careers. They might get a few more wins, but a brutal finish is coming for both.
Atleast Izzy didn't take much here, even if I think it was early.

Goddard is consistently early with fighters he knows well.
Newer guys on debut he is happy to see them work way more.

I am not dealing with recency bias, I've been watching MMA since like 2002 and every major show since 2005. I watched MMA before it became consolidated into what it is today. When we'd still have one night tournaments.

I was there for YAMMA

Heavyweight was respectable until 2011-2013-ish. That's when everyone got old. Otherwise Heavyweight MMA had a lot of good fighters but they were spread across different promotions.

he would still have a slight advantage with speed and we've seen plenty of guys do well in their late 30's at 205 is why I could see him crack the top 10. He could get a dub or two but eventually he would run into someone that would end his chin

If you want to be a little dramatic, Izzy hasn’t looked good for 5 fights now. The Pereira rematch was his last hoorah and it was a great result, but it wasn’t a great performance. Strickland then clowned him and he looked past it against DDP. He didn’t look good out there tonight and got stopped without much trouble.

He’s in a rough spot.

You reckon? He was picking apart Imavov in that first round. That uppercut was more Izzy trying to slide his head back, but people have worked that out and he is a touch slower now.

How was it a shit stoppage? Izzy took multiple punches flattened out on the mat face down with his arms pinned under him. That's getting stopped 10 out of 10 times.

I agree. My guess is he wanted to go out on a win and was feeling pretty good. Hopefully that's it for him.
One of the best to do it and will be missed when he is gone. The guy took a huge break and has still been as active as Sean and DDP haha.
The Era of 2 fights a year and double champ attempts is what we have to look forward to now with Izzy, Volk etc all moving on.
