The UFC's long-term aim is admission to the Olympic temple via the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation.

If golf, rugby sevens and BMX bikes can be accepted by the International Olympic Committee to compete on the Summer Olympic program at Rio in August, UFC argues it has equal claims as a progressive, telegenic sport.

Furthermore, if modern pentathlon – reflecting the skills of a Napoleonic soldier who could ride a horse, cross a flooded stream and fight the enemy with a sword – can continue as "modern", then a sport founded in 1993 should qualify.

But if the IOC executive is looking to the past, the UFC traces its beginning to the Athens Olympics in 648 BC when the sports of Pankration (literally meaning "all force") was on the program. A combination of boxing and wrestling, it barred gouging, biting and testicle grabbing.

Many of the sports in the martial arts mix are already on the current Olympic program, such as boxing, wrestling and judo
.

Furthermore, the IOC places great importance on sports catering for male and female participants, a key plank in MMA.

In 2012, the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) was established for the further development of the sport globally. The website lists 36 countries, although UFC officials claim it is now closer to 40.

The IOC would not consider a sport for membership unless it had active participants in a minimum of 60 countries. "

Lorenzo Fertitta said:
The Olympics are a business and they want to attract younger viewers for all these big television deals
UFC spokesman said:
Where we're going with UFC, eventually we will be part of the Olympics. If someone had told the Olympic Committee 20 years ago that their number one program at the Winter Olympics would be snowboarding and half pipe, they would probably think they were crazy. But that's where we are today because that's what the kids want to watch — and that's wherere we are going"

It would be a pale imitation of the MMA we know and love due to shitty IOC bureaucrats and horrible judging that makes our current MMA judges look like Solomons.

Isnt Boxing,Wrestling,Judo already in the olympics?

Snowboarding and Half Pipe lol wtf. That's a balant lie.

Hockey is easily the most viewed sport in the Winter Olympics.

Amateur boxers wear protective gear.

I don't know how many countries would feel good about a potentially bloody and non-point fighting sport being apart of a relatively clean Olympics. Maybe if everyone fought like GSP or Frankie Edgar it could save face as a competitive sport there.

They actually just changed the rules on that, next Olympics won't have headgear. Men's anyway.

the ufc fighters who are considered "very active" fight 3 times a year. how you want to fit MMA into olympics?

if i train ufc can i do ufc in the olympics?

I think pros with under 15 fights can go to the Olympics now too.

They don't really listen to this anyways. Like how many countries do you think have a downhill BMX parcourse or something? And the countries that have a bobsledding parcourse you may even count on just one or two hands. Probably almost every country has an MMA gym, though.

They were supposed to have mma in the olympics over decade ago (2000 I think) under the name pankration and already had a US team preparing. It got pulled two weeks before they were supposed to fly out. My brother in law was part of that team

Don't expect to see many submissions, because the fighters will be gimped with 16 ounce gloves, head gear and shin guards.

Odds are it would be hard to get MMA in the olympics because you will get lots of pushback from Wrestling Organizations, TKD Organizations and Judo Organizations who fear they would lose competitors.

I'd much rather see them try and put BJJ into the Olympics, but then again we already have the ADCC.

Add to all that the bureaucracy that would create BS admission procedures that would make buying BJJ belt ranks look legit.

Will not happen.

I am involved with a bit of IOC stuff, and it just won't happen.

They are pulling wrestling out, we are fighting just to have kickboxing in, MMA in its current form, will not happen with the IOC.

MMA could become a part of the Olympics but not the UFC.

Bellator has better chances of becoming an olympic sport than UFC

Lower amateur MMA already has some more tame rules such as no ground striking. How about a format like that to keep it simple?

Imagine the ESPN replays and highlights of the inevitable wall n' stall and deadlocks in the guard. :D
