In a close race, any last minute scandal can be enough to swing the election. It doesn't even have to be a legit scandal, it just has to have bad optics and stay front and center of the 24 hour news cycle for a couple of weeks.

I know TS was taking the piss but how did this become the mainstream narrative when it's so erroneous?

First, the "declaration" was made by Democrat members of the Senate and House Committees of intelligence (without hard evidence mind you) and not by anyone who matters from within the intelligence community.

Second, "hacked the election"? That implies that voting machines were attacked, which was thoroughly disproven. The Wikileaks "leak" is all they're accusing Russia of. How did the story become "hacked the election"? Unless there was FSB agents deep cover as vote counters there's simply no way
