Tyron Woodley's Unpopularity Explained by Din Thomas

Why aren't you a Woodley fan (if you aren't)?

“People don’t like wealthy large black men who speak their minds.”

Like WTF is Lebron James?

Some dude from my home city who spoke his mind a few weeks ago, and some conservative lady (Laura Ingraham) told him to "shut [the fuck] up and dribble."

He just keeps blaming everyone else for the damage they are causing to his brand. That's ridiculous and it's extremely bad marketing.

I think that's one of the main reasons about now, but I think when he sat out for a year, folk were a bit indifferent about it at the time, but then when he finally fought Lawler people frowned upon sitting out that long.

As for his complaints about being marketed or lack of it - imo, the UFC are fucking horrendous at it. The old Countdown specials they did were very good and the one they done for GSP v Penn II got me hyped for the fight.

When he starts questioning what fans should and shouldn't like and I feel, when he tried to turn himself into the 'bad guy' and that didn't work, it seemed contrived what he was doing and trying to put on a character of sorts and had to re-invent himself when doing interviews.

What a lot of folk forget or may have forgotten is when CM Punk first came into the UFC and some fighters called him out - one of them being Pendred - and Covington, when he was Woodley's pal, went back and forth on Twitter. Covington made a comment about the British slaughtering the Irish centuries ago and Woodley had already chirped in about Conor fanboys jumping in to defend Pendred, but he never mentioned anything about Covington's comment being distasteful, which is ironic considering;

he's bashed Conor for the same thing.
made that weird comment about Thompson and bringing the American flag out for their fight.
addressing racism in the US like a 5 year old - 'it still exists' - yeah, but what's that got to do with anything when you don't consider your lack of marketing from/by racists.
and then the whole 'I could tell you stories......but I won't'

I don't think Woodley comes off as big headed and I couldn't care less if he's black and wealthy. Don't think Thomas is giving a good account of why folk dislike Woodley and why should he when he's his buddy. I think a lot of it comes down to a sense of entitlement and like a lot of fighters he gets cranky.

I like Woodley and was behind him as a fan after he shocked me vs Lawler. Slowly his wow factor faded and was replaced by whatever façade he is choosing to portray.

Will still watch em fight but honestly, meh.

You've never heard a black person say another black person acts too white? Let me guess, you've never heard the term Uncle Tom either? Lol, what planet do you live on?

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-o...tes-think-qb-russell-wilson-isnt-black-enough

Then there's this: "There is also an element of race that needs to be discussed," Freeman wrote. "My feeling on this -- and it's backed up by several interviews with Seahawks players -- is that some of the black players think Wilson isn't black enough."

https://www.usatoday.com/story/game...er-questions-robert-griffin-iii-race/1767071/

"But my question, which is just a straight, honest question, is: Is he a brother or is he a cornball brother?"..........."Well because that's just how I want to find out about him. I don't know because I keep hearing these things. We all know he has a white fiancée. There was all this talk about how he's a Republican, which, I don't really care, there's no information at all. I'm just trying to dig deeper into why he has an issue. Because we did find out with Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods was like, I've got black skin but don't call me black."

https://www.thedailybeast.com/charles-barkley-is-right-on-acting-white

Barkley goes further by noting that blacks are likened to a bucket of crabs who are willing to pull down those who are successful and intelligent. I wish that Barkley’s commentary on certain elements of the black community rang false; several years of research on the subject proves that the “acting white” accusation is sadly alive and well in America.

so let me get this straight

you go back to three articles, dating back to 2014, 2012, and 2014 to cite to justify saying "That's the most most racist, self loathing garbage I hear from some black people, the ones that make a lifestyle of complaining about racism in America." in 2018?

so let me ask you. Do Seahawk players or Charles Barkley "make a lifestyle of complaining about racism in America?" or was that part of the strawman?

and you think that's the MOST racist thing you hear? are you kidding? sounds like you're trying to minimize how badly white people more commonly treat black people and want to exaggerate how badly black people CAN treat black people in obviously rarer instances

Me too. not a fan, don't hate him either. He had been exciting before but I defended him in fighting that way in his title fights. At least defending. i hope has a more exciting fight next time, but whatever.

Alright, I'll admit my statement definitely falls under the category of 'hyperbole'. Just like your literal statement of "lmao no one says that and if they do they're probably white themselves." is hyperbole, too. So, literally no one has ever accused a black athlete of being too white? My personal experience and the articles you just glanced at suggest otherwise.

i also immediately followed that by saying "and if they do" conceding that it does happen, just not enough to imply it's a general consensus or common occurance

Hearing Din say these things makes me question his intelligence. Jones is a piece of shit, a steroid abuser and a cheater - people like him because they can relate to that? That is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.

However, he does have a point though. Race is of course one of the reasons why Woodley has less fans than what a non-black person would have. Just look at the poll here - right now, 17.7% ticked the "he's black" option. Plenty of these are likely just people trying to be funny, but there is no denying that racism does exist but that would of course apply to all [colour] fighters and not only Woodley. Woodley isn't beloved by everyone because he whines all the time, has had several lackluster fights, rarely fights and always pulls the race card any time someone criticizes him. Not good qualities if you want to become popular.

It is quite easy to see why hes unpopular, i asked a few friends, more casual types that do not sit on here like me browsing sherdog. They said Woodley complains to much and ostracizes a chunk of the UFC fan base (white people) by constantly complaining about racism and other excuses why he is not this huge star. People tend not to like complainers, especially in fighting. Even Mark Hunt got shit for complaining and hes ALWAYS been a fan favorite, and his complaining had nothing to do with race.

The reason they were put off by Woodleys comments, is they don't really buy that someone is trying to 'keep him down' or treat him a certain way because of the colour of his skin, to be frank a few of them said they would like him alot more if he just shut his mouth and tried to be an exciting fighter.

What's annoying is, when hes not crying and making excuses for his boring fight style (not pulling the trigger as a champion) I quite like him. When i see him on the Fox desk he seems honest and down to Earth and doesn't seem to put his bias into the conversation when talking to other fighters, even in his weightclass.

This is great.

He will lose more fans because of this

Hes last 2 fights was pretty dam boring, you have to be an exciting fighter to be popular. Let's be real, Conor would not be any where near this popular had he been boring ass fighter coming up.

I can understand where Din is coming from tbf; but personally I don't dislike the man, I just don't enjoy watching him fight and therefore don't want him to win.

Has he ever had an entertaining fight, ever? Maybe the Condit one was ok.

He should do what he needs to do to win, but he shouldn't expect that style of fighting to make him popular.

Kinda. People used to LOVE Tito though, and all he ever did was bitch and moan.

he doesn't constantly complain about race, though. find the dates of the articles and actually read what was said.

the most recent article published was beginning of 2017 where a journalist was asking him these questions and he cited muhammad ali's death and made a connection between that and his politics.

before that, he was just saying what people have said to him on twitter calling him racial slurs and what not.

there have been very few times where he's actually blamed "racism" for his lack of success getting fights or attention and it hasn't been within the last year. yet people still keep crying about it and using it as a reason to dislike him because it strikes a nerve with them that any person of color could ever say that white people aren't always fair with them.

honestly, the bigger issue is how incessant the "anti-woodley" community is about bringing up race every time his name is mentioned. it's really not him.

I never saw that at all man. I've always disliked Tito and i know a huge amount of chuck fans that did too. Out of me and my 4 MMA buddies, not 1 person liked Tito.

Not saying you are wrong, just sharing.

I voted because hes black..
Nahh just kidding. I voted because he's annoying.
And for me it goes back to the Nate the great fight in SF..
He thought he had that won and his stupid mum in the background going on with her bad self.

Then low and behold Nate lit him up and smashed his face and ego..

That's it..

Yeah, I dunno who those people are tbh, maybe he pays them? I kinda like Tito, but it's more that I feel sorry for the guy haha

TLDR I'm now saying it's because he's black but it's because he's black.

funny how he doesn't mention less than 30 strikes thrown in a 5 round fight.
