GAME OF THRONES Prequel Starring Naomi Watts Not Moving Forward at HBO

GTO1S8t.jpg

The untitled Game of Thrones prequel from Jane Goldman is not moving forward at HBO.

Said to focus on the "Age of Heroes" and the first-ever battle between man and White Walker, Goldman's project — which had filmed a pilot over the summer — will not be advancing to series, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. According to sources, Goldman e-mailed the cast to share the news. HBO, as it typically does on projects in development, declined comment.

The news comes shortly after word of HBO nearing a deal to produce a second pilot based in the world of Game of Thrones, from the minds of author George R.R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal. The series is said to focus on the reign of Targaryen kings in the lead-up to the events of Game of Thrones, aligning the vision of the project much more closely to the days of Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) than the now-scrapped Naomi Watts-starring prequel — though still quite a bit earlier than the events of the Emmy-winning HBO series, which wrapped its final season in May.

Following the series finale, THR spoke with HBO's Casey Bloys for an update on timing for the next iteration in the Thrones franchise. His response at the time: "We're shooting the pilot in June, you can do the math and figure out when it would be on the air. What I'm not doing is working backwards by saying, 'This has to be on the air by this date.' We want to do the best show possible. This is a pilot, so we're doing it the old-fashioned way, which is shooting a pilot. My expectation is it will be great and we'll move forward and it'll move along on a regular TV timetable. I don't want to speculate any dates."

Featuring a sprawling cast including Watts, Miranda Richardson, Joshua Whitehouse, Marquis Rodrigez and more, Goldman's untitled Thrones prequel was said to take place during the Age of Heroes, thousands of years before the events of Thrones. In this period of Westeros history, the Seven Kingdoms weren't even a twinkle in the eye, as the continent was separated into dozens of their own kingdoms. It was an age dominated by heroic figures like Bran the Builder, credited with creating the Wall, and Lann the Clever, credited with founding House Lannister.

HBO's logline added: "Only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros' history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend — it's not the story we think we know." Now, it is a story that will not be told.

That HBO would pass on this Thrones prequel comes as a shocker, but is not totally out of the blue. The original pilot for what would become the premium cable network's biggest hit ever was originally reshot, recast and redeveloped. Sources say HBO wasn't thrilled with the final cut of the Watts-led pilot and asked for changes in edits before scrapping the entire thing. Still, expanding the world of Thrones remains a top priority for the pay cabler, which is under new parent company WarnerMedia (formerly AT&T). This is the first time HBO has ever revisited one of its scripted originals — announced before its Deadwood movie (which provided a proper ending for the series) and the upcoming Sopranos feature. Game of Thrones is a global mega-hit and huge revenue driver for the Casey Bloys-led network. The franchise is worth billions, with foreign sales and merchandising factored in.

HBO, for its part, has been on an aggressive buying spree as it looks to compete with billion-dollar streaming competitors from the likes of Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and forthcoming Apple TV+, among others. The Throneslibrary will be a key asset for WarnerMedia's own arrival into the streaming wars, with HBO Max expected to launch in April.

The pilot pass arrives a day after Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss walked away from a planned trilogy of Star Wars feature films. The duo, who will be credited as executive producers on anything Thrones related at HBO, departed their overall deal with the premium outlet for a five-year, $250 million film and TV pact with Netflix.

GREEN LANTERN Live-Action TV Series in the Works from Greg Berlanti

Greg Berlanti continues to add to his record-breaking TV series tally.

The prolific producer behind The CW's rapidly expanding Arrow-verse has set two DC Comics-inspired series at HBO Max, including a new take on Green Lantern and anthology Strange Adventures.

"Both of these original DC properties we’ll be creating for HBO Max will be unlike anything seen on television,” said Berlanti, who now has 21 live-action scripted originals across seven outlets. "An anthology series of cautionary tales set in a world where superpowers exist, and, in what promises to be our biggest DC show ever made, we will be going to space with a Green Lantern television series, but I can’t reveal any more about that just yet."

This is Berlanti's second swing at the world of Green Lantern. He previously penned the screenplay (alongside Michael Green, frequent collaborator Marc Guggenheim and Michael Goldenberg) for the 2011 DC-produced Ryan Reynolds feature. That movie was met with negative reviews and was considered a flop. (It grossed $219 million vs. a budget of $200 million.)

Strange Adventure, meanwhile, is an anthology that explores characters across the sprawling DC Comics world. The hourlong drama will explore closed-ended morality tales about the intersecting lives of mortals and superhumans. It is based on DC characters and, like all Berlanti-produced shows, produced by Warner Bros. TV and Greg Berlanti Productions. GBP topper Sarah Schechter will exec produce alongside John Stephens (Gotham, the original Gossip Girl). Charlie Huston (Gotham) will produce, while Selwyn Seyfu Hinds (The Twilight Zone) will serve as a consulting producer.

Game of Thrones Prequel HOUSE OF THE DRAGON Gets Series Order from HBO

JUHaKz5.jpg

Hours after its surprising decision to pass on its Namoi Watts-led Game of Thrones prequel, HBO on Tuesday afternoon announced a straight-to-series order for a prequel in the world of Westeros called House of the Dragon.

The rumored project, which focuses on House Targaryen and was created by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal (Colony), was given a formal series order on Tuesday at the end of HBO Max's formal unveiling to investors.

The prequel is set 300 years before the events of the flagship series which tracks the beginnings and the end of House Targaryen. Emilia Clarke earned four Emmy nominations for her role as fan-favorite Daenerys Targaryen. Martin and Condal will pen the script for the 10-episode project, which is based on Martin's book Fire & Blood. Miguel Sapochnik, who earned an Emmy for helming the "Battle of the Bastards" episode, will direct the pilot and additional episodes. Vince Gerardis will also executive produce. Sapochnik and Condal will serve as co-showrunners. House of the Dragon will be the first project to stem from a new overall deal that Sapochnik has signed with HBO, in which he will develop and produce content for both HBO and HBO Max.

“The Game of Thrones universe is so rich with stories,” said HBO programming president Casey Bloys. “We look forward to exploring the origins of House Targaryen and the earlier days of Westeros along with Miguel, Ryan and George.”

This is the first time in Game of Thrones franchise history that a series will not go through HBO's typically years-long development process. The flagship famously underwent reshoots and recastings before eventually getting a series green light. The Watts-led prequel was one of multiple scripts developed before it was picked up to pilot (and subsequently passed on Tuesday).

The Targaryen prequel is not one of the previously reported prequels that had been in the works at HBO since 2017. Instead, it is a new take on the world that was being developed by Thrones favorite Bryan Cogman. Cogman confirmed earlier this year that the prequel he was working on was not moving forward. (Cogman, like showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss, is no longer involved with the franchise. He departed for an Amazon overall deal, while the latter pair went to Netflix.)

HBO first announced four prequel series in the works and quietly added a fifth one in the months that followed. Of those, two are still active at the premium cabler. HBO programming president Casey Bloys previously told The Hollywood Reporter that he would not do any sort of sequel to its recently wrapped Emmy-winning franchise.

It's unclear which of the other remaining prequels in the works remain active after HBO passed on its pilot starring Watts from writers Jane Goldman and Martin. That drama was set to take place thousands of years before the events of Thrones and chronicled the end of the Age of Heroes, a period in Westeros history marked by legendary figures like "Bran the Builder" and "Lann the Clever," originators of the Stark and Lannister families.

Expanding the world of Thrones remains a top priority for the pay cabler, which is under new parent company WarnerMedia (formerly AT&T). This is the first time HBO has ever revisited one of its scripted originals for a prequel/spinoff series of any sort. Game of Thrones is a global mega-hit and huge revenue driver for the network. The franchise is worth billions, with foreign sales and merchandising factored in.

The pilot pass arrives a day after Game of Thrones showrunners Benioff and Weiss walked away from a planned trilogy of Star Wars feature films. The duo, who aren't involved in any other follow-up shows, departed their overall deal with the premium outlet for a five-year, $250 million film and TV pact with Netflix.

I hadn't watched the new ABC series Stumptown until yesterday when I binge watched the first episodes and watched the latest one Wednesday night. The first two weren't very good and I almost didn't watch the third but I wanted to see how the underlying stories played out and I didn't have anything better to do. I was pleasantly surprised. It is very slow developing so many people probably lost interest. I doubt that I would have watched the second episode if I had watched it week to week.

It seems to be getting high ratings but maybe not in the right demographics.

I gave up after the 2nd episode of Stumptown. I'll give it another chance. Thanks.

I watched last week's episode of THE AFFAIR and loved it. Probably my favorite episode. I watch the show on and off but the forest fire episode intrigued me and ended up watching the whole episode. There were some catharsis moments between the two main characters. Though I haven't cheated on anybody, there were things in the episode I could relate which I couldn't in the first season (5 years ago).

Suits spinoff PEARSON cancelled after one season. Good thing I didn't bother to watch it. Gave up on Suits two years ago also.

I've only seen the first four seasons and have been meaning to get back into it until the those two main characters get married and leave the series.

Does the show's quality fall off a cliff at any point?

And its no surprise 'Pearson' was shit, she was the most unlikable main character in Suits.

Loving the new seasons of Always Sunny and South Park. These shows never let me down

If you are into animated series, I can recommend some for you as well.
Dragon,
I've checked out the "Rising of the shield hero" as per your kind suggestion in some other post itt. 'twas unexpectedly entertaining. Thank you for that.

Can you suggest some other good ones?
I'm not much into anime. However, loved the classics: "vampire hunter D", "ghost in the shell", "ninja scroll", "shura-no-toki", and "berserk".

Again, thanks for being an awesome part of our sherdog experience!

Thanks. Very cool that you checked out Rising of the Shield Hero and liked it as well.

Coincidentally I was thinking of making a new thread listing the anime shows I have seen over the past few months and making some recommendations. I'll tag you when that thread is up.

I just finished/caught up on HBO's Barry. It's hilarious and excellent.

I saw the Netflix thread, but are there any Hulu or Amazon specific ones? Or is all/most TV stuff posted here?

On Hulu, Wu Tang: American Saga was great. I hope a season two gets green lit.

On Amazon, I'm super excited for The Expanse to start again. I'm glad Amazon picked it up once Syfy dropped it. Having read the novels, there's some amazing shit coming up over the next few seasons.

too lazy to look for a Mr.Robot fred but damn, I just caught on to episodes 4 & 5.

that "Death Howl" episode I found to be pretty fucked up..

Tried to watch the first episode of HIS DARK MATERIALS but just couldn't stay focused or interested in whatever was going on and ended up stopping it and playing something else.
