The reality is the majority of congress today are millionaires before they're even elected. The exposure they gain on the national stage allows for extra earnings potential during and after leaving office. Ethical politicians place their assets in blind trusts once elected that continue earning during their term. Unethical politicians like Trump, just keep earning through their private business during their term.

No on in congress is living off their salary. It should just be abolished entirely.

Good point. A lot of politicians have other forms of legal income. For example: according to Bernies income tax releases, he made over $1M just on sales of his book about his 2016 Presidential campaign. Someone might see a report on his net worth and just assume he's a crooked politician without realizing his net worth was increased in a legal way.

Again, in reality, in order to even be considered for a position like this you have to be some kind of mover and shaker to even get on the ballot. Wealth, influence, experience, connections.

Some schmuck making 40K a year isn't going to be considered for local office let alone national.

Another big source of wealth is marriage. A lot of politicians just marry rich and use their spouses resources to campaign almost like it's a hobby for them.
