Trump said women who have abortions should be punished, and then shortly after backpedaled.

A large portion of the country opposes abortion. A lot of people believe abortion is murder. If abortion is murder, why shouldn't a woman who chooses to have an abortion be punished?

Hi Dolan,

Another Trump thread it feels like I am in the HW but instead of Conor it's Trump. lol

Post that part of the interview per verbatim, thx

An abortion is an unpleasant procedure , its punishment in and of itself

He said if the procedure was made illegal and women went out and carried out that illegal procedure then they should be punished.

For some reason people are upset about this. Since when are people not punished for doing illegal things?

Stupid comment politically tho and it highlights his inexperience running a campaign and not saying what you actually think.

But it's not murder.

A "pro-choicer" (who I refer to as simply "pro-abortion") obviously doesn't think it is, so their outrage at Trump's comments is to be expected. But it seems like even a lot of anti-abortion people criticized Trump.

Mr. Trump’s Republican rivals moved quickly to distance themselves from his initial comments as well. Gov. John Kasich of Ohio said, “Of course women shouldn’t be punished.”

“I don’t think that’s an appropriate response,” he told MSNBC. “It’s a difficult enough situation.”

The campaign of Senator Ted Cruz of Texas said attention should be focused on providers of abortion, not the women who receive them.

“Once again, Donald Trump has demonstrated that he hasn’t seriously thought through the issues, and he’ll say anything just to get attention,” Mr. Cruz said in a statement, adding, “Of course we shouldn’t be talking about punishing women; we should affirm their dignity and the incredible gift they have to bring life into the world.”
Can someone explain the Kasich/Cruz position? Abortion is murder, but the woman who initiates the murder shouldn't be punished? If a woman pays someone to kill her husband, the woman is legally punished just as the hitman is. Why shouldn't a woman who has someone murder her unborn child?

If, big if, abortions are made illegal, should there not be some form of punishment for breaking the law?

Correct, and actually his later comment taking it back made even less sense.

So its only illegal if a doctor performs the op? if the woman does it herself its legal?

What happens in the future if you can download a script to some surgery bot and have it performed yourself?

They should be punished (unless their life is in danger). They often face emotional scars (punishment) later on for doing it though.

They should be punished. They often face emotional punishment later on for doing it though.

So obviously you think abortions should be illegal. Why do you think they should be illegal, and what do you think the punishment should be?

That makes sense, so what do you think the punishment should be?

I think it's funny he was commenting on abortion in the first place. You know damn well that he has no convictions against abortion. I doubt he had ever thought about it until his campaign people told him that it might be important to speak on it. In which he did without knowing what he was talking about, as usual, and firmly to do his liar's jig once more

I'm all for letting people clarify, we all misspeak sometimes.

He clarified, it's over.

So obviously you think abortions should be illegal. Why do you think they should be illegal, and what do you think the punishment should be?
Whatever the punishment would be for killing your baby would be. It's murder unless the woman's life is in danger.

Now to the OP, if abortion were to become illegal, it should go without saying that there will be punishment for bring convicted of doing something illegal

From Ted Cruz' website:

https://www.tedcruz.org/cruz-immigration-plan/
2. Restore the Rule of Law

President Obama, aided and abetted by a Congress that ignores its constitutional and moral duties, has abused his executive authority and refused to enforce the immigration laws that are currently on the books. These failures undermine immigration enforcement and endanger the American people. We need a President who will follow the law, hold those who break it accountable, and take seriously the duty to protect Americans. To restore the Rule of Law, a Cruz Administration will:

End President Obama’s illegal amnesty. The Obama Administration has issued at least 20 executive memoranda over the course of his two terms in office that grant amnesty, ignore the law, and worsen our immigration problems. He has rewarded millions of illegal immigrants with a promise that our laws will not be enforced against them, and that they will be allowed to stay in the United States without consequence – and, in fact, receive benefits funded by American taxpayers.
So Cruz has a problem with nonviolent criminals not being punished, but he doesn't think *murderers* should be punished?

Conor and Trump are pretty much the same person.

Whatever the punishment would be for killing your baby would be. It's murder unless the woman's life is in danger.

Could you be a little more specific, as in would you be in favour of the death penalty or life imprisonment?

I want to start a Republicans / Conservatives for abortions and gay adoption campaign ; there is just so much economic benefit to those two things.

In this specific incident, Trump was in the wrong; however, i agree with his obviously damage control / back track statement: that in the case of congress making abortions illegal - the dr, not the women would be punished.
