Economy Trump's April 2nd Tariffs

Yes that's all I've heard but that doesn't really explain anything or say anything of substance. How viable is making this country a manufacturing hub at this point, and how much money/time would that even take? How can you even commit to something like that if there's a distinct possibility the very next administration will undo all of it. Unless of course there's something I'm missing here.
You're not missing anything. Companies cannot shit out a new factory next week to stand up manufacturing here. Just planning something like that takes years. They are far more likely to raise prices to offset the tariffs and wait until the next administration rolls back the tariffs. But prices won't go back, they never do. The only wild card is if this drives us into a recession/depression and people just cannot afford to live anymore. At that point the billionaires will buy up the whats left of the destruction for pennies on the dollar.

It's already a hub for capital goods and the second largest manufacturing nation on the planet. Capex for rolling out factories was through the fucking roof during Biden's term and key legislation was passed to bolster and incentivize it further.

They are bragging that the tariffs will be used to cut taxes, so they already know America won't magically become self-sufficient.

This is just like a random VAT on foreign products

so your stance is that we are already a manufacturing powerhouse? What are the tariffs about then?

You have to be a special kind of stupid to think America ever swings "violently left"

They swing from moderate right to whatever the fuck Maga is at this point.

Fair enough, I worded it badly. I meant you swing from Republican to Democrat at the moment. Both sides seem to be fucking things up so then the other side gets in even though they fucked things up in a different way last time.

I still think you need a third party that's somewhat competent.

Indeed! We had a level of corporate and government investment in America (relative to nominal GDP) during Biden’s term that hadn’t been seen since the 1980s.

So the tariffs are a replacement for taxes? Whose taxes, and taxes on what?

I ship (export and import) raw materials to the usa.

Metals (copper, lead, zinc, etc), steel pipe, agrigate, wood Pellets, sulphur, potash and tons of other shit to the usa. Sometimes through them to other countries, sometimes usa is the destination.

It's very chaotic now. Mostly the companies I'm hearing from are just trying to cut out usa all together. It's too volatile and uncertain. Will they return after Trump leaves? I'd imagine so, business is business.

A family member holds one of the highest private business positions in Canada is doing the same (leaving it vague purposely). But hes now on a full "screw the usa" stance that I thought I'd never see him take.

Jesus, sounds worse than I expected tbh

Nothing really, just ideology.

Some people do believe really stupid stuff when it comes to economics and are too ideologically driven to think otherwise.

Voting Trump was just the American version of voting Hugo Chavez or Erdogan.

Who the fuck knows, stop trying to make sense from what it is essentially an ideologically driven policy.

I won't get one though, just more drive by retardation.

Not a fan of the dems on social policy, but economically I wouldn't call them fuck ups.. in fact the pattern is the GOP crashes the economy and the dems save it. Will be no different this time.

The tariffs are an absolute disaster, they won't encourage investment because nobody believes they will stand--what encourages investment is stability, not chaos.

When you look at the list of countries with the highest tariffs they are the countries who produce things we have no interest in making (clothing, cheap electronics). They are not jobs that people want back. All that is going to happen is the inexpensive walmart clothing and daily goods are going to cost twice as much and people will be making the same $$.

That's a single industry and single trade partner, I'm looking for an explanation of the entire plan including the blanket tariffs and someone please help me understand why they used that method to come up with the amounts?
It doesn’t make sense other than as the start to a negotiation process.
