At a more direct level they can potentially lead to inflation of certain goods as the tariffs will be essentially passed on to customers much of the time, beyond that really it depends on the wider economic impact and exactly what Trumps goals are.

I do think a significant issue here as well is how government spending is targeted, similar to say creating debt what makes inflation bad for the population is if they don't see improvements in income or public services, if Trump uses this to push though tax breaks for the ultra wealthy it will likely be bad for most Americans.

Whether the US actually has the skilled workforce for significant manufacturing growth is questionable I spose or at least its something which will potentially need years to build up via qualification and training.

Ironically I would argue the end result might actually be more immigration as companies look to bring in skilled foreign workers although you could argue that does still have plenty of benefits to the US if it actually works.

Does anyone know what % of vehicles sold in the US are manufactured in the US? I suspect it's relatively high.

The volatility of these changes should be a huge concern to a manufacturer in the US. If they increase capacity to meet the new demand, they might take years doing so and by that time the tariffs are gone and the money is wasted. If they don't increase capacity, and the tariffs stay, then they are losing a great deal of potential money.

In the meanwhile for customers in the US the cost of vehicles will go up.

100% of USA manufactured cars are made up of parts manufactured elsewhere.

That was a quote from a Downing Street spokesperson. You’re saying the Sunday Times made the quote up? If they’re saying it. It’s in the ballpark of the approach Starmer is taking.
