International Trump to expel Chinese grad students with ties to PLA schools

People used to say the same thing about US in 19th century that it can only copy after Britain. Say thing was said of Japan in the 1960's and South Korea in the 1980's. You need to understand that countries don't stay still in terms of their technological innovation. China already files more patents than US as of last year, a key indicator of innovation.

This is still true of Japan and S Korea so they were correct but wrong about the US. Sheer numbers of patents doesn't necessarily indicate any fundamental innovation as you seem to believe just as the total number of engineering students graduated doesn't necessarily indicate any technological advantage. Quantity does not equal quality.

Do we have stats on how many go back to China after graduation? Seems like there'd be a pretty good retention rate, but I don't know what other factors, like family and financing, might be meaningful.
Most of them go back, most of them want to stay. Unless they're PLA in which case I'd imagine they'd want to return.

*edit*
I shouldn't say most go back, more like a plurality, with the other two paths being a company in the US and a professorship in the US.

Yeah there's something called the Constitution in US and Canada that kinda forbids selectively applying laws on the basis of nationality or race. The ban will last about two hours before getting struck down.

Rather than posting this comment, why didn't you just quote the part(s) of the US Constitution prohibiting discrimination based on nationality?

So, dismantle our educational system, then refuse entry to those most qualified to work jobs your citizenry cannot.

SMRT..................................

14th Amendment

"These provisions are universal in their application to all persons within the territorial jurisdiction, without regard to any differences of race, of color, or of nationality, and the equal protection of the laws is a pledge of the protection of equal laws."

Look at all the commies in here vigorously defending the PLA.

We're at war gentlemen. The time is now to stop being greedy and to start thinking about future generations.

Cut off the enemy's supply lines and starve them out.

From a Supreme Court justice in a landmark case law ruling, good enough for you?

So the Constitution doesn't actually say what you claim it does, and then when asked to quote the part of the Constitution that supposedly says what you claim it says, you quote something other than the US Constitution (and without even saying you're not quoting the Constitution). You should be carded for spreading disinformation.

Affirmative action?

War. Because of what?

This is obviously not a war. Competition. Strategic rivalry etc

War. Because of what?

Because we can all see what China is doing.

It doesn't deserve to rule this world.

The report acknowledged that China, Russia and other states were conducting foreign interference activities in Canada and that “elected and public officials across all orders of government” were being targeted.

China seems to have infiltrated Canada’s highest intelligence agency – and it’s not the first time

Canada needs a plan to prevent hostile post-coronavirus foreign takeovers

Don't trust China! China is asshoe!

Did any of you ass clowns actually read the source in the OP? They're only expelling those who have ties to the PLA, so no, it's not 60% of graduate students in the US, and it's not going to be 360,000 students.

From the article (only a few sentences in) :
"The expulsions could affect at least 3,000 students, according to some estimates."

God damn you morons need to get a grip.

I have a feeling it will impact more than 3,000 students. Yes, I understand it is only students who have their tuition covered by the Chinese military. However, how does one prove where their tuition money comes from? Who's job will be to track down whether a particular student had their tuition covered by the Chinese military, the Chinese Agricultural Commission, or the Chinese Health Commission? How hard will the accounting practices be for one Chinese government agency to pick up the tab over another Chinese government agency?

I'm having flashbacks of Paul Bremer telling the people of Iraq that no one that used to be in the Ba'ath Party would be allowed to be a part of the new Iraqi government, even though all civil service jobs were filled by members of the Ba'ath Party.

And yes, within the first news articles reporting this issue, they are stating that American universities are expected to fight this decision.

Lastly, will this encourage US universities to open campuses on Chinese soil like college have done in Qatar, UAE, etc.?

I read this in a Chinese voice.

....

Just so many unintended consequences are possible.

It's already happening. US sanctions Huawei. Now China has put billion into semi-conductor independence. Chinese firms and other countries who supply them are rushing to de-americanise their supply chains. In text it doesn't sound like much, but unless the US starts mandating that companies use US suppliers, this is what will happen. Companies will use one supplier that can serve both markets. Could be great news for Europe.

It's probably inevitable, but jesus, it seems to be happening so quick. This could go one of two ways:
1) If Trump wins things will be very unpredictable.
2) If Biden wins there'll probably a de-escalation but an overall rise in temperature as anti-Chinese sentiment still remains.

The West has been the main innovator for hundreds of years now. The arrogance is that the Chinese can't innovate. It's simply not true. Even a casual look at Google shows some of the developments they are introducing:

https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/featu...les-of-high-tech-innovation-in-china-3788679/

People have an idea of Chinese as robotic, non-thinking, chicom slaves who won't say boo to a goose. They've been cartoonified where they are rabid communists who only prosper by stealing American IP. This is a problem as instead of recognising that a period of intense competition is coming, some Americans are hoping to rely on trying to fight against the tide.

What major tech innovation have they come up with though? Churning out more STEM grads and filing more patents does not say much. 1 patent that raises the efficient of consumer I.C. engines to 40% is more valuable than several patents that provide a modest incremental rise in celluar bandwidth.

This new law the Trump admin is thinking of is only going to apply to a tiny fraction of the total number of Chinese students. Total students 360,000 ; this law will affect about 3-5K , per Reuters.

Which Americans? The Asian American students that get denied to make room for students with inferior grades?
If Chinese students are cut back, that would mean more empty slots of Asian Americans.

Well they're leading the world in 5G, solar tech and high-speed trains. You can take a look at the link in my post for some things and the youtube video below. You can see that Huawei has become the second largest phone company in the world. There are things that are becoming self-evident. Only this year a Chinese chip maker entered the top-10.

Small actions can have outsized impacts. The US sanctions Huawei and all Chinese tech companies are looking to de-Americanise their supply chain. It could be a similar thing. If you were a student would you go to a university where you could get kicked out mid-term because you're being used as a political football?
