Trump proposes stronger libel laws, weaker first amendment

I do live in the USA. I also fail to see how stopping radical hate speech is a bad idea. Is it good to promote pedophilIa or hate of Christians or Jews? Should we allow Imams to spread lies.

That behavior can undermine our nation our security and ruin future generations of children. There is always a risk of totalitarian control the key is you can't live life in fear. It's either too little government and the fear that decentralized powers will tke over or exploit you or the fear that too much government will destroy you.
Who is talking about radical hate speech anyway?

I'm talking about freedom of the press.

Easily, yeah. He loves the power. He'd be flying high for at least the first term.

I disagree.

We are not in a day in age where any president can fly high. There are serious things afoot.

And he will not have the establishment shielding and protecting him the way they did for Bush. That is what cost them their power in the first place.

People react to hate speech all the time. If you call someone a n****r on camera you can bet your ass you're getting fired and are going to have a tough time finding another one. If you start spouting loony conspiracy theories people fail to take you seriously. We don't need the government issuing fines and jailing people for saying dumb shit.

Like any good fascist knows, surpressing free speech and free press is essential to making America great again. You can't have a final solution to the 12 million illegals with liberal media poking around at the gorey details.

It sounds dramatic, but I don't see how his stream of rhetoric has been less than a call to a strange form of national socialism. Ultra-populist, xenophobic, anti-press, unnervingly patriotic, hawkish, and even across the political divide into healthcare, eminent domain, the one-off wealth tax (despite his backpedaling). This guy is all over the top end of the map, government hand in everything.

I support Donald Trump but i disagree with him here. Freedom of speech and freedom of the press should be unlimited in my opinion. I agree that the picture in which the press paints Trump is disgusting though.

I'm with you, TS. And "purposely negative ... and false" articles are already not protected (even accidentally negative and false articles aren't protected).

Freedom of speech and the press should be the right to tell the truth to the best of your ability, and the press should be (and is) required to take care not to publish false and damaging claims even by accident.

If he has this low level of respect for the first amendment, it's a caution that he will severely abuse executive power, which has grown in recent years.

“Keep his coat! Confiscate his coat! You know it's about 10 degrees below zero outside,” the boisterous billionaire barked from the stage. “You can keep his coat. Tell him we'll send it to him in a couple of weeks.”

Give him a little power, and he does petty shit like this. Can't imagine what happens when he has executive power.

send troops to their deaths. Do you really see trump having the stomach for these things?

Well according to Trump he went to a military academy as a child and that gives him more experience than most soldiers

This is a nice piece of primary pandering. Those damn liberal rags!!!!! Let's sue them into oblivion!!!!!! I'm more conservative RAWR!!!!!!

Trump's no dummy. He knows he has no chance in hell of changing anything since that libel protection comes straight from the Supreme Court and no President can do a thing about it.

But it keeps him in the papers so it's good campaigning.
Trump has a history of extremely aggresive use of defamation suits. I can fully believe he would prefer that they were more effective.

The "press" is there to report honestly on topics using facts. What they have done is completely gotten away from using fact, and they espouse negative opinion on anything that doesn't fit their agenda. It's about time they got reined in.

The media has become nothing more than propaganda for the highest bidder.

Meh, he'll try.

I doubt he even really wants the job. He handles all the praise of running for office just fine, let's see him handle all the negativity and hatred they comes with being the president.

Sounds eerily familiar, doesn't it?

"so when they write purposely negative and horrible and false articles"
libel- a published false statement that is damaging to a person's reputation; a written defamation.

This is what libel is. Nothing wrong with what he said.

Watching a speech that Rubio is giving now.

"For a guy that likes suing people, he should sue whoever did that to his face!" Ouch, lmao.

Incoming lawsuit.

Gives him more experience than our current president.

Has Trump announced which Wagner piece will accompany his inauguration? Ride of the Valkrie? Faust?Götterdämmerung?

Did the buffoon at least spell "libel" correctly?

Then why does he want to "open up" the laws, if they're already exactly what he described?

Dense.

Translation: The press is saying things I don't like. They should say only things in the way I want them said.

The idea that the press is obligated to only report strict facts is absurd and untrue. The press is an extension of speech, and speech is meant for people to express any sort of position at all, so long as it isn't verifiably untrue or maliciously unfounded.

More than pandering, it's another in a long line of statements that show him for the autocrat he is, and show his disrespect for the rule of law. Bush and Obama have been heavily criticized for their use of executive power. Let's imagine for half a second how Trump is inclined to behave. It should be a total nonstarter. When the best we can hope for is that he's lying or that the fabric of our democracy will stop his bad actions, it should be clear that he's disqualified. Yet he holds a strong popular support, and it is unknown how well that will translate into a general election. It's not something to brush off. This is how shit goes very wrong.

(ed: I'm aware of how much I sounded like a bad Sam Harris impersonator just there)
