Economy Trump Day 1 Executive Order: 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada with additional 10% on China

Canada’s #1 export to the US is oil. I’m sure this will do wonders for the price of gasoline.

We should just cut all oil exports to the US so we can have super cheap oil in Canada, and export the extra to anyone who wants it other than the US. Same thing with all the electricity exports from Quebec to the northeast US. And if you really want to get serious, no exports of nickel, uranium, platinum group metals, or fertilizer either. Have fun as the entire US energy grid goes under along with a nice chunk of its agriculture and manufacturing industry.

There has been a lot of interesting work over the differences in conservative and liberal personalities and brain structure. Basically conservatives are looking for a strong father figure to lead them. They may be able to tell a story that hides this, but in the end, they want themselves (and especially others) to be ruled, not governed. This is why cultists like @I Am Legion and @Mr Holmes will never hold him accountable for anything.

Liberals, on the other hand want a government that is responsive to the people and works to make society better for everyone.
The strong father figure can literally do no wrong (except appear weak), so all Trump needs to do is continue appearing strong and defiant and he will actually increase his support among his base.
"cultist" coming from you? <lol>

I made no comment on whether it was good or bad policy. I also didn’t minimize anything. I’m betting he excludes energy.

I feel like it won’t happen and people get upset for no reason. Which is why I wanted to bet.

Would I put tariffs on Canada? Probably not. Mexico? No.

China, absolutely.
lol

We already have plenty of nickels. You guys have loonies/toonies or some shit and you can keep them.
You're just jealous because we got the big'uns.

Because you said it's not gonna happen lol.

It has already been happening. At least, with China.

There's already a tarriff on Canadian softwood lumber too. Has been for decades.

In fact, the Biden admin just raised it.

This is my exact position incapsulated
That's a very silly take then. Of course I doubt you'll be consistent in this, you'll use this logic to hand waive away his obviously bad policies like tariffs while touting the ones you perceive as good as being representative of his admin.

Hold me to it. I doubt campaign promises — shocker!

Its especially weird when tariffs were such a large part of his campaign's messaging, he even brought them up when asked what he'd do about childcare.

Even if he did that it would still be a disastrous policy but no surprise you're here running defense on Trump's behalf.
The hacks justifying this policy are pathetic. You know they'll justify anything. I was going to say short of murder, but they'd probably justify that too.

Then they wonder why I vote for the democratic party.
