Trollery- is it changing and should it?

I don't think trolling is for bullies. The online time I ever "troll" is when someone else is being a bully and I'll annoy them for laughs.

Trolling has definitely evolved. I remember in the early days of the internet when you could simply go into a chat room or a forum and call every body offensive names and they would all get pissed off.

If you try that now nobody will pay any attention at all and you will be quickly banned by a mod.

Now the word troll gets thrown around too easily. I have seen people have different opinions on a topic and suddenly the word troll gets thrown out.

I sometimes miss the days when randomly typing an F-Bomb would cause instant chaos.

I feel like there are less legit trolls on SD than there was when I discovered this place.

The last really good one I remember in Mayberry was this guy that started a thread about how he found out he was gay. That shit was hilarious.

I just assume everyone is trolling always. None of you are even real people.

That said, sometimes I wonder what it would be like if we were all sitting at a real table irl and shouting out our comments instead of typing them anonymously. I wonder how people would change...

I understand where you are coming from. I also have a difficult time taking anybody seriously when it comes to the internet. As far as I am concerned we are all playing the role of a character. The member name, Avatar, and written posts combine to create that role.

That is not to say that there aren't honest people on sherdog, I am sure there are plenty, but I have no way of indicating who is being genuine and who is just trying to get attention unless I personally know that person.

Mayberry is probably the most problematic when it comes to knowing if someone is being truthful or not because it is the Forum where people discuss more personal things about there lives.

people are definitely getting de-sensitized to being insulted. i'd wager that since the beginning of the internet age, empathy in culture has been slowly chipped away, and people are becoming more ruthless in order to be funny or have fun.

Exactly, and the bolded is truth. The presumed sincerity of this place throws me right off sometimes.
