Transparent cage fence in the UFC

Start the fight mid-arena on a wrestling mat, after that there are no rules whatsoever last man standing wins.

I'm all for barbed wire around the top because the "jump up and straddle the cage" thing is played out

Blood would be a serious problem for plexiglass, that's usually where the thought starts falling apart.

I've been on this board on and off since at least a decade ago and this idea has come up fairly regularly.

I've thought about that. I think the biggest problem is that every time grappling against the perimeter would occur, there would be a giant sweat smudge left in one spot until the end of the fight.
IF they clean it up between fights! ;)

The problem is when people who don't know anything about MMA also can't form this basic thought. "They only use a cage because they're trying to maintain the 'hardcore' image of the sport. There's no other reason for it to be a chain link fence." Well, okay then, what would these geniuses offer as an alternative?

A cage link fence is the closest thing to a wall that can still be reliably seen through. End of discussion.

The fence should be made of cheese.

This will be the ultimate game-changer.

Was that considered at all , and what do you think ?
What are the pros and cons ?

I attended a Bellator event in 2012 and had cage-side seats, and couldn't see much at all. Too many things in the way.

I've always wondered... 'Why does it need to be a cage?'

Why can't it be thick & clear plastic? Like bullet-proof glass (that's actually 1" thick plastic).

IMHO it'd be a huge improvement for all involved, especially those in attendance.
No fence grabbing.
The judges would be able to see clearer.
No chance those outside the 'cage' could be splattered with blood.

Truth.

We'd have visibility issues, potential glare, advertisers balking at the new 3D blood splatter video game effects, AND hockey has shown plexi can straight up explode if hit wrong.

Others have mentioned other surfaces but none of them solve all the problems.

You wants fans to pay $10,000 to sit in the front row to watch the fight through this Thick layer of Plastic?

Also, that thing has no 'give'. You're going to seriously hurt someone driving them into that, or slamming them into that.

Then you're going to get blood and sweat all over it, so nobody can see anything.

When I had cage-side seats, I would have seen alot more through thick layers of bulletproof glass/plastic.

I was thinking "Rather than paying $150 and traveling 3 hours I'd be able to see so much more if I was watching this on my 65" Samsung in my Living Room."

Remember 'JDS VS Black Beast?' That took place 2.5 miles from my house. Didn't even bother to check ticket prices. Watched it in my living room.

What blows my mind is there were cage-side seats at the MSG less than 48 hours ago that were $100K.
The people with the best view of the fights, are the cameramen.

I'm not saying there shouldn't be testing involved, including 275-pound men slamming into it at full speed.
Obviously there must be 0% chance it'd shatter at an event.

Yes... if only someone could invent glass cleaner in a spray bottle.

I keep coming back to this but I would love plexiglass like in the NHL.

Imagine seeing a knockout finish standing where the guy dribbles the head off the plexi.

Might get foggy in there so they will need to have window cleaners that run around in-between rounds like the snow shovelers in the NHL.

Edit: Oh and I almost forgot, imagine all the blood stains on the glass. Would be pretty badass. Maybe we skip the window cleaners completely.
Lol.

Remove the cage and add a moat with alligators. Fence gravs are eliminated and there will be very few judges decisions.

Never saw a UFC event live being the plebe that I am but I have often wondered how watching events on TV is probably better given how live audiences are hindered from fully seeing the entire thing with the cage fence being in there.
I don't, Probably just sour grapes on my part.

They have giant screens above the cage so if the action moves to a bad angle from your seat you look at the screen.

Meh, it should be legal tbh, fighters already use it as support to get up, to protect themselves from subs, to take down fighters, to clinch and win pointd by "control".

So what is so bad about grabbing it to defend a TD or get up? The offensive fighter has to fight to get the TD in the middle of the cage or remove their habds from the cage, it would create new dinamics and differentiate even more MMA grappling from straight wrestling or BJJ
