Top 30 BJJ fighters of all time in MMA history

You’ve left out a lot of really significant guys. Like guys you shouldn’t have to reach for.

Ferguson
Alexi Oleinik

I believe guys like OSP deserve to be on the list, because he’s essentially changed the sport.

My boy @Jackonfire will back me up when I say that no list of BJJ guys in mma should exclude Nate Diaz. After all, he’s got 8 submission wins, which is tied for fourth all time in the ufc with Jim Miller and frank mir
And 4 of those won submission of the night.

Shoeface - Antônio Carlos Júnior. Tied with Maia for most submission wins at MW. He's a multiple champion in jiu jitsu.

And I found this a lot harder than the other two. I prob left a lot out.

Submitted Estima. One mistake doesn't neglect all skills.

And hardy said it himself, he's made of rubber and which makes him very hard to submit with joint-focused subs. If GSP knew that, he would of went for the choke im pretty sure.

GSP subbed Bisping, who was only subbed once in his career before, by Rockhold.
He subbed Hughes, who's no slouch on the ground.

6 subs wins total, 2 of them against top 3, the other against top 10.

MAia has failed to sub a many guys that he should have subbed, does that make him a bad BJJ practitionner?

GSP failed to submit Dan Hardy due to (admitted) technical errors and lack of killer instinct. His BJJ was not bad, but he's not top 30 all-time in MMA. Anderson Silva's BJJ was much better than GSP's, and I'm not sure if he would even be top 30, but he would absolutely be above GSP. Sorry, friend.

@JustOnce

Dave Terrell's last win in BJJ competition was Dean Lister, who's on your list, and he also holds a submission victory over Ricardo Almeida in ADCC.

Didnt cross my mind since he fought forever ago and wasnt very succesful but good call but not sure he just wasnt very good in MMA to merit a place here

I'm just trying to rattle off some of the guys I can remember who had good BJJ creds. There's a few guys on the initial list who didn't do too well in MMA, so didn't think it was a big factor. Thought that we were just trying to establish the best BJJ guys who fought in MMA at some point?

That said....Shields and Machida have some accolades. Were they mentioned?

If you think that AS' BJJ is better, let alone much better than GSP then you know nothing about BJJ.

Who did AS sub? Hendo and Sonnen (the guy with probably the worst sub defense in mma history)

GSP subbed Bisping and Hughes. Two guys pretty hard to submit.

So, I guess nowadays BJJ is almost pre-requisite for most fighters, and we have some exciting BJJ wizards coming into MMA as well more and more. Though wrestling can dictate where the fights go, it's probably BJJ that's most important whether you end up on top or bottom, though obviously it could be argued that it's not only BJJ that can prepare for you for that.

It probably feels like that there have been more success at the highest level with wrestlers(https://forums.sherdog.com/threads/top-60-wrestlers-of-all-time-in-mma-history.4148829/) probably due to their ability to dictate where the fight goes, but perhaps there are more BJJ fighters than Judo based fighters at the highest level(https://forums.sherdog.com/threads/top-10-judo-fighters-of-all-time.4148627/)

I think I'm least confident to recall all the BJJ fighters perhaps, and I think it's most tricky, I mean if you just count Gracies, maybe you can find Top 30 out of them over the years, but here it goes...(ps. I will just list more famous Gracies....)

The criteria is how well you've applied in MMA your BJJ skills to success and what you have been able to do in pure BJJ as well. And mind you, it can be subjective thing when you combine the two, what you consider more important, and how much success they may have had. For one, Kron would sub Joe Lauzon so fast, but Joe did much more in MMA so I'd rank him higher here.

I wouldn't list someone like Fergusson on here, who's pretty slick but who is a wrestler and then got their BJJ black belts later, like someone like Weidman for one. Or Jim Miller or Jake Shields. I guess to be fair, I put Dean Lister here, who started out as a wrestler...hmm...but Dean did so much in BJJ and MMA as well so I'd include him here

Also, GSP is pretty tricky case. His grappling base is BJJ but....

  1. Werdum
  2. Maia
  3. Nog
  4. BJ
  5. Royce
  6. Mir
  7. Arona
  8. Paulo Filho
  9. Jacare
  10. Oliveira
  11. Rickson
  12. Nate Marquardt
  13. Bibianno Fernandes
  14. Rani Yahya
  15. Renzo Gracie
  16. Formiga
  17. Royler Gracie
  18. Ricardo Almeida
  19. Dean Lister
  20. Thales Leites
  21. Matt Serra
  22. Marcus Aurelio
  23. Kenny Florian
  24. Lovato Jr
  25. Roger Gracie
  26. Joe Lauzon
  27. Kron Gracie
  28. Hall
  29. Rodolfo Vieira
  30. Gary Tonon
Where is Shields?
