And on that, I am with you. I am a purist and I do want fighters to go up by fighting top ranked fighters. And Aspinal did not fight anyone to warrant a title shot. he beat another prospect. That's it. two nice prospects fought against each other and one won.

I think we are living at a time where people mix popularity with being good.
Islam is a good example. Khamzat is another.
People are now in such a hurry for their favorite fighter that they don't need to climb the ladder... it's straight to a title shot.

If you are that good, you will beat other contenders on your way to the title shot.

Stipe has been KOed twice in his last 4 fights and has had exactly two fights since 2020 (1-1).

In Aspinall's last 10 fights, the only loss is a TKO due to injury. Since 2020, he has fought 8 times (7-1).

You have to be absolutely insane to think that a single win against a retiring DC, back in August 2020, should allow Stipe to leapfrog Aspinall, who in that 3 year timeframe has 7 wins including 1st rd finishes over Pavlovich (no3) and Volkov (no5).

The funny thing is that Gane has a better case for a title shot right now than Stipe. Like Aspinall, he has also fought 8 times since 2020. In that time, his only two losses are against NGannou and Jones, and he has 6 wins, all of which were againsty top 10 HWs.

...Jones is the greatest LHW of all-time. But he hasn't done much at HW yet, one impressive win so far. Jones would need at least 5 wins at HW before I consider him a good HW fighter.

No, he didn't lose to Reyes : the judges decided he didn't make enough to take the belt from Jon Jones and i agree with them. It was a close fight, but Reyes basically ran away the whole fight while Jon Jones was always the aggressor.

He's the interim Champ for starters. You expect him to just sit on his arse and wait for the Champion to get fit, fight someone retired and then think about defending against him?

Honestly Jones should have vacated with that injury, like Jiri and Hill did at LHW. Then we'd have had the excitement of Aspinall starching Pav for the belt, then the drama of Jones coming back to try and "take back what's mine". Tell me that fight wouldn't sell like nobody's business.

I like Stipe but he retired years ago. There is no sporting reason to hold up the division just so Jones can get fit and beat a middle aged civilian for some crude and paper thin claim of heavyweight legacy.

Everyone knows Jones should have vacated and winning the HW belt a second time against a current champion who represents the cream of the next generation would be the ultimate finish to his career. Instead he just wants the Stipe loot and Dana's only too happy to indulge him.

It's cynical shit like this that brought millions of disgruntled boxing fans over to UFC. Match making the best v the best was a breath of fresh air for many boxing fans. This Jones v Stipe farce is short sighted from Dana.
