The news reports say the listening devices recorded it. No mention is made if anyone actually heard it until naval personnel went back and checked their logs after the submersible was reported missing. They still wouldn't know for sure though whether it was the Titan, so they had to launch the search and rescue.

I’d like to hear more about how he knows the weights were released. From what I know the only communication was through texts. And if the crew up top knew of that why would they wait for so long to call it in?

i'd imagine that the texts sent to the surface probably automatically had the sub's current depth embedded in them. So from that....you would be able to tell if they were ascending or descending just comparing the 2 most recent depth numbers. That's all I can think of with regards to that, and somehow Cameron got that info from one of his deep-sea dive contacts.
I have heard other experts in interviews comment that the sub was actually ascending at the time of the implosion, so .... wherever they're getting their data from it would seem legit.
