News Titanic Tours Submersible missing in atlantic ocean

someone on here said he is on the spectrum or has Asperger’s or autism? I think?

Yeah that was me. Looking at his Twitter feed it seems pretty obvious. His rather singular obsession with music concerts, for example.

"Netizens have expressed outrage over the 37-year-old's actions despite him lying on the autism specturm. The Spectator recently confirmed that Szasz has “high functioning autism.” US Magazine also revealed that he was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome when he was 15 years old."

He’s 37?!?!?!

Obviously it's slightly different to these "adrenaline junkie" types, but without these risk-taking, adventurous individuals we'd likely still be living in caves.

Yeah probably some kind of high risk high reward personality type. If they succeed they can do so spectacularly and back in tribal times would've been awarded high status, etc. But if they fail... lol.

That Szasz guy is a fucking weirdo, plus

I don't believe that's what's wrong with us. I think its just human interest, imagining what it's like to be trapped like that is novel.

Submarine disasters are definitely one of those morbid fascination things that I can find myself going down wiki holes about from time to time (along with plane crashes and mountineering disasters).

The one that sticks in my mind the most was HMS Thetis which half-sank on trials (one end flooded and hit the seabed, the other end was still on the surface); it was possible to leave via an escape chamber but the chamber needed to be flooded to equalize pressure with the outside water, and only one person could use the chamber at a time. The first four men managed to get out, but the fifth panicked and drowned which left the chamber stuck half open and inoperative. There were still 99 people left in the submarine and they all suffocated to death.

The sub was salvaged and repaired (imagine being the ones to open that thing up...) and went into service in WWII where it was sank again with all hands lost. Incidentally a detail I hadn't read before (just rereading the wiki article) was when it sank the first time (a few months before the start of WWII) one of the letters of condolence received was from Hitler, lol.

Am I the only one that doesn’t think this is so egregious? He can sit at home all week worrying himself which will have absolutely make no difference on the outcome of what happens or he can take his mind off it for a couple hours at a concert. Add to that this was a poor decision his step dad made. I think what matters most is the state of his mom and if he should have stayed with her or not. But this isn’t a situation where his step dad is dying in the hospital and he could be by his side. Posting on twitter for someone to sit on his face is bad optics but I bet a lot of us come on here and post jokes/ irrelevant things in times of grief or stress to take our minds off it. I don’t see the need to take the pitchforks out on this dude, even if he’s a gigantic idiot

Careful what answers you wish for.

Are the families of Paul Bernardo's victims glad that all the answers they could ever want about their daughters' final hours and days were on videotape? For closure...

I guess we'll see if it comes to that. Rest in peace. This CEO has not secured a very laudable place for himself in history.

I think the family will want answers particularly in terms of liability.

Yeah the traditional explanation is that a ship can carry a boat but not vice versa.

I posted this YT video awhile back. A ship leans towards the starboard side when taking a portside turn - i.e. when turning left, it will lean right. A boat leans to the portside when making a portside turn - i.e. when turning right, it will lean right.

Not completely true. All submarines are considered boats. US Ohio class submarines are 560 feet long.
I was going to post my experience as a Submariner that it was always "the boat", and the the senior enlisted is the "Chief of the Boat" (COB). But it was never explained why it was that way.
The last knock could have been the sound of the sub imploding
About the implosion theory, if the submersive really imploded, wouldn't the someone be able to pick it up/hear it?

At many points in my training, which included qualifying as a Quality Assurance Inspector (responsible for certifying subsafe systems testing), we were played the recordings of the USS Thresher imploding. It is horrifying and does not sound like banging. Popping.
I don't think the recording is on here, but there is a lot of sobering information. thresher recording - Google Search They were unable to find the debris for 14 months afterward and they had multiple ships on the surface monitoring it continuously and communications right to the end.

for some reason, when reading this...it reminded me of that fake Russian experiment where people went crazy with the gas

While I agree with your point in a general sense, this isn’t some kid. He’s in his 30s. He should have the sense to not be posting that shit online publicly with his big stupid grin

Here is what the Daily Mail says he said in an interview with Teledyne Marine:

'When I started the business, one of the things you'll find, there are other sub-operators out there, but they typically have gentlemen who are ex-military submariners and they — you'll see a whole bunch of 50-year-old white guys,' he said.

'I wanted our team to be younger to be inspirational, and I'm not going to inspire a 16 year old to go pursue marine technology, but a 25 year old, you know, who's a sub pilot or a platform operator or one of our techs can be inspirational.

'So we've really tried to get very intelligent, motivated, younger individuals involved because we're doing things that are completely new.'

Rush explained: 'We're taking approaches that are used largely in the aerospace industry, is related to safety and some of the preponderance of checklists, things we do for risk assessments and things like that are more aviation-related than ocean-related and we can train people to do that.

'We can train people to pilot the sub, we use a game controller, so anybody can drive the sub.'

Here is the interview with Teledyne Marine

If you listen to him talking about industry vets telling him he is nuts for letting inexperienced pilots in a submarine in the Pugent Sound he claims the vets don't know how great multi beam sonar - which he uses - is. The impression he is giving off is not that he won't hire old White guys, it's that he wants younger people, to inspire other young people, and he bucks the trend in the industry on how things are done. The 50 year old White guys is just euphemism for the traditional civilian submarine industry veterans.

For the pertinent portion where he mentions the 50 year old White guys, skip to around 26: 45. He never says he won't hire 50 year old White guys, he only says he tries to hire younger people. He even says that a 16 year old isn't going to be inspired by him because of his age but the 16 year old will be inspired by a 25 year old employee of the company.

The tabloids and internet culture warriors are misrepresenting what he said. This reminds me of people on right leaning forums blaming the issues with the F35 and the Boeing 737 Max on diversity hires without any evidence to back up their claim.

And you don't think the desire to hire someone for something other than their qualifications to do the job lead to this?
He fired a guy who told him it wasn't safe. He refused to submit to industry standard inspection and certification.
The 50 year old White guys (experts) were either avoided or ignored so he could have an "inspirational" company - one that ignores the hard-won wisdom of experts in his chosen field. He only wanted people who were too afraid or too ignorant to tell him no.

His comment is being miscontrued. It looks like what he meant was that he wanted fresh new desingers / explorers rather than stay with the traditioal old guard. If you look at his crew, head of the company and pilot, they all are older White guys. This guy - Stockton Rush - seems to give caution to the wind and just wants get on with doing things, so it seems like he was looking for 'rebel' designers/engineers who won't be as safety conscious and industry standard engineers / designers would be.

No, it’s a verbatim quote. You’re trying to misconstrue his direct quote with commentary.

Even if we grant him going to the Blink 182 concert his public post about it was pretty crass.

Even if we actually want the details we would find...and I'm not sure we do...I don't know if they're worth making anybody open that capsule and live with it. And somebody would have to.

There are people who do this kind of thing , and this wouldn't ve anywhere near the worst they've had to do.
