All this talk about the sub not withstanding the pressure wouldn't account for the knocking noises.

They heard the knocking every 30 minutes. That's a pretty even interval, like something that someone would do to let you know they're still alive.

My money is on power failure. That explains why the sub couldn't surface as well as why the communications system failed.

There are already regulations in place. It will be interesting to see what liberties SeaGate might have taken to circumvent the regulations. It also begs the question, was this really tourism in the traditional sense? I'm all for making tourism as safe as possible and while everyone calls this deep sea tourism, their website doesn't use that word. They present it as a survey expedition, a scientific mission.

They can exclude whatever words they want. If it's not tourism, what would you call it?

I would have to assume it's longitudinally ballasted quite well to maintain a zero-pitch attitude most of the time.

I would think that even with a full power failure it would maintain relatively 0degrees pitch, as yo wouldn't want to waste any propeller power on simply keeping it at pitch-angle of zero degrees (completely level).

Boats are sharter than 65 feet. In the USCG have a Coxswain in charge that is generally enlisted E3 (rarely) and above, navy boats will sometimes have a boat officer directing the coxswain...the USCG coxswaibs are better trained and don't let Os run our smallboats...
