Time to Man Up by Jim Wendler

We have a phrase for that already, "grow up"

Did you know that the languages, especially the English language, often have multiple ways of expressing the same thing.

Besides which, the connotation of "Grow up" is one of maturity. Where "Man-up" is more specific to cutting out the excess and doing what needs to be done. Ie. not playing around, but getting work done.

Yeah, and in english, that particular phrase is gendered, and is so in a way that I find annoying- that willingness to deal with hard situations/will through adversity is a predominantly male trait. It's not the biggest deal, it's just annoying to me. I'm not expecting that being a good powerlifter/author about fitness makes you Judith Butler or what have you.

Assuming the statement is gendered is on you guy. That's your preconceived notion. When I say "man the f*** up" I mean stop being a kid and get it done already. Also interchangeable with "harden the f*** up" by which I also mean be more of a man. I could just scream "be more like Doug Hepburn!" but that doesn't really flow.

The second half of the paragraph contradicts the first half. And no, since he uses other language that reinforces that reinterpretation, it's really not on me, it's in the text and it's standard usage. Even if inside his head Jim was intending total neutrality, those words carry meaning in the popular culture, and the popular meaning is mildly annoying to me. If it weren't dead as hell at work right now I probably wouldn't have written a word about it. We live in a culture that kind of infantalizes women, and so I do a mild eye roll at it. My reaction to the dr pepper 10 commercials isn't "WE NEED TO STOP THIS HATE SPEECH NOW", it's "well, that just made me dumber to watch". Similarly, the entirety of my reaction here was "Jim said a dumb thing in the middle of a bunch of very smart things"

Many languages have words that are gendered, but aren't necessarily used in reference to a person's gender. French and Spanish, for example, have gendered nouns - where inanimate objects are gendered.

If you actually want to raise an issue with word usage in the english language, a more appropriate one would to like into the difference between how the words "Boy" and "Man" are used, vs. how "Girl" and "Woman" are used.

You are the exact kind of person that gets told to man the fuck up. Frequently, I imagine.

Someone is still a little bitter that Duke didnt man the fuck up :D

Whining about gender-context is not exactly very manly.

Just sayin'.

Well played sir, well played.
We're all a bit touchy about it still.

Well Ohio State actually made it to the final four before they choked, big time

Blah, I hate rooting for sports, all my teams are horrible/chokers

Yes, occasionally expressing mild annoyance at something on the internet causes all kinds of havok in my interpersonal workout experiences. People are vastly more interested in the fact that I expressed some mild feminist sympathy than the quality of my work on the mat. True Story.

you are NOT your skinny jeans. You are NOT your low fat diets. You are NOT how much bodyfat you have covering up your abs .

I don't have a problem with "Man Up" - esp as it inspired that classic thread.

North of Vag is wank though. Love Wendler, but that's rubbish.

God I hate the phrase "Man up" Do we really need to identify every attribute we don't like with women?

Other than than agree with general outlook of the article.

Clean the sand out of your vagina and move North of Vag.

This connotation may or may not exist. But I don't know why people here are so hostile to the suggestion. Selfcritical is just expressing a viewpoint on the meaning of some words, not advocating beating up grandmothers or shitting on squats.

Are we a cult now, where it's not enough to train hard and well, we also have to like the same people and phrases, and say them regularly, and if someone doesn't like our icons, we have to trash them?
