Tessa Thompson Joins THOR: RAGNAROK; Natalie Portman Not Returning

Tessa-Thompson-Thor-Ragnarok-Dragonlord.jpg

Creed star Tessa Thompson has a key role in Thor: Ragnarok. The third installment of Marvel’s Norse myth-inspired franchise is heading towards a June start with Taika Waititi in the director’s chair.

Chris Hemsworth is back as the Marvel superhero version of the Norse god of thunder with Tom Hiddleston and Jaimie Alexander among those that are also returning. Also playing roles are Mark Ruffalo, as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, and Cate Blanchett.

Details for Thompson’s part have not been revealed, but she could be the female lead as Natalie Portman, who was the female lead as Dr. Jane Foster in the previous two Thor installments, is not returning. Ironically, Thompson is due to also shoot Annihilation, Alex Garland’s follow-up to Ex Machina, opposite Portman this spring.

Thompson’s other credits include Dear White People and Selma. She is also a lead in HBO's much-buzzed about Westworld series.

Is Thor banging this girl? If so I approve.

I never saw the Thor movies but Natalie Portman would have made me watch them. Was her character that bad?
Oh so shoved down our throats.

I heard that woman's name a thousand times in those two movies. "... Jane Foster!" or "Jane Foster..." or simply "Jane!"...

If so, Lady Sif is destined to not bang lol.

I liked her in the first Thor movie and thought she was adorable in it but her character felt forced or shoehorned in The Dark World. But my biggest gripe is that because of Natalie Portman's star power, I felt that they had to give her major screen time which led to other more interesting characters (like Sif and Warriors Three) to be relegated on the sidelines.

They tried way too hard to make Jane Foster a significant character. Their effort to feature Foster limited both Thor movies (ruined Thor 2). Another classic example of Hollywood being "original" and failing hard.

Should've at least toyed with the idea of Jane Foster being Thor.

Emily Blunt would have been great for that role, but I would have nerd raged (even though I loved the comic female Thor).
And they should have had her be a nurse as intended, instead of an astro physicist, lulz.

Astrophyscist Jane Foster >>>>>>>> Aether-powered Malekith

Tessa Thompson Rumored to Play Valkyrie in THOR: RAGNAROK

Tessa-Thompson-Valkyrie-1-Dragonlord.jpg

In addition to Chris Hemsworth continuing his role as Thor himself in Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok, director Taika Waititi has brought in Mark Ruffalo to play Hulk once again, and Cate Blanchett to take on the role of Hela. Tom Hiddelston will be back as Loki

If the previous rumors are to be believed, Thor will be going through some trials that will see the death of a major character and set the movie's stakes. The final showdown with Hela will feature an army of the dead commanded by the villainess doing battle with good Valkyries from Valhalla and the souls of the righteous fallen, including the dead major character. It turns out the second part of that sentence is quite important.

A few days ago, it was reported that Tessa Thompson (Creed, Dear White People) had joined cast of Thor: Ragnarok, and that Natalie Portman would not be returning to the franchise. According to the original Deadline report, Thompson's character was called "a kind of superhero and will appear in other Marvel films as well."

Latino Review is reporting that Thompson is playing the MCU version of Valkyrie. In the comics, this character's real name is Brunnhilde, and she is chosen by Odin to lead the Valkyrior, the Asgardians who roam battlefields, and select the honorable dead for Valhalla. The title of Valkyrie just applies to whomever leads the Valkyries though, so we may or may not be seeing her before she takes on said title. Either way, this character aligns with the report, and could very well appear again in Avengers: Infinity War.

There was a seemingly glaring part in the Dark World where it looked like Sif and Jane were about to become rivals for Thor's affection, then the movie totally didn't do that and wasted the Warriors Three.

Not sure why else they went that route except Portman's star value.

Yep yep. To this day, it still stings to me how they squandered a terrific opportunity to bring along Sif and the Warriors Three to Svartalfheim and then bring them to Earth also for the final battle. Along the way, Sif and Jane's interaction would have been highly entertaining.

I never bought the Jane/Thor relationship. One of the rare hollywood examples of the guy being way too attractive for the girl. Portman is certainly pretty but too many act like she's some perfect 10/10.

Oh I thought Thor Ragnorok was only about Thor's search for the epic weapon from Final Fantasy, the legendary Esper and the badass airship.

Plus more of Jaime Alexander isn't a bad thing. Especially in tight leather pants.

I like Natalie Portman... she's too skinny for me but she's still pretty.

I didn't like Thor 2 but 3 sounds like it's going to be good. Hopeful.

I was a big supporter of Idris playing Heimdall (and has been great), and Jordan playing Torch (he was perfect, the writing just sucked), and I'm even down for Bond....Black Bond, but I'm going to put my foot down on this casting for Valkyie. Nothing to do with race, it's just try hard and feels inauthentic.
