Things That Should be Taught

How about a 3rd history class taught by someone that is neither of those things.
Someone that looks at history without those biases?

That would be beneficial as well sir.
I would have been down with it, but i am trying to be realistic.

They say basic personal finance.

I'm glad my school had mandatory home ec and industrial arts. I like to make shit and fix shit.
I had home ec which consisted of half the year cooking and half the year in sewing class.
I took it to hang with the ladies, but I learned more about sewing machines and cakes and cookies lol

I am too sir.
I have no political affiliations, and I am sure there are more people that think like that out there that would make fine teachers.

I think the single most important education that every single person on earth ought to learn and that would change humanity more profoundly than any other is a serious meditation practice with full context in transcending personal psychological difficulties and limitations.

the amount of pain and damage that is transmitted generationaly when there are perfectly workable solutions to it is criminal.

the economic cost of this in terms of lack of production etc is probably incalculable too. every single generation ought to be happier more peaceful and more loving than the next. it would probably only take a few generations before humanity was producing saints at 18.

Dealing with bullies sucks, and I don't think you need to be taught how to punch to blow a bully out of his shoes...I didn't.

There are a lot of things that parents don't teach, but maybe because they weren't taught themselves.
Or maybe some parents want you to figure things out for yourself because they won't always be there to teach you.
I don't know what goes through parents heads, as I don't have kids.

I do feel like we teach ourselves in many ways and going through the learning process is what sets those things as permanent in our memories.
We are the ones that ultimately have to succeed even if we don't have great parents or great schools.

There are many people willing to help you along the way, some are only in your life a short while before they're gone.
Its up to us to recognize the real ones from the fake ones and hold one to the real ones for dear life.

Sorry for the rant sir.
my bully was in boxing gym 5 days a week and went on to have a career in professional boxing. NOTHING worked against him. he was just plainly a better fighter.

I'm gonna go meditate before reading and going to bed. Thanks!

simple car maintenance things:
-checking engine oil
-checking/changing air filters/fluids/tires/battery/spark plugs

otherwise you be easy pickin for all the car mechanics charging a hundred bucks to replace your clean cabin filter. i had to learn the hard way sadly
My driving teacher in high school taught us that and that was useful. I don't know how much I retained though because I have go on youtube to refresh these things.

My son's high school has a cooking class which he took. Also has a wrestling team which he's on. Daughter who's 8th grade cooks dinners at home and is involved in a bunch of clubs. I show them how to balance a checkbook and what interest means.
I don't think you can teach social awareness or have a class for that, but joining clubs or playing sports can help. Kids learn that by having friends and interacting with them. I think there will always be kids who grow up antisocial.
That's nice. My high school didn't have a cooking class or wrestling team.
I don't think you can teach social awareness to people who aren't interested, and having a standardized curriculum for social skills sounds weird. But I wish there was something that was taught. I used to work with very small children and I really tried to teach kids the best I can to handle certain situations using social skills because most kids would either cry and wait for an adult to handle things for them, or use violence.

JFC.
Another one blaming the school system for things their parents should have taught them or they could have educated themselves about. I'm sick and tired of grown ass adults blaming school systems for things they don't know or can't do.
Really?
So the whole time you were in school, and even when you finished high school, you never educated yourself or learned about anything outside the scholastic environment?
Or were you too lazy to educate yourself about things and would rather play the victim role?
By the way: I'm a retired public educator.

He mentioned schools more than once. And most schools do not have home economics anymore.
Aww. Learning how to do something or learn something can be frustrating. Poor thing.
I would agree on much of public school and college education being useless but I taught elementary where the focus was reading, writing and arithmetic. Very practical and valuable skills. But there are still majors in college which are useful. Engineering, medicine, law.
He also mentioned cooking. Really? Recipes are pretty easy to follow.
Not once did he take personal responsibility.
You're obviously biased and taking things too personally. I used to be an educator too lol
If you read my post I did educate myself.
I merely said it would be nice if they (as in school, parents, maybe society) taught kids certain things and you responded by taking things personally and started attacking me. If you think what I said is a slight on you, then that's your problem. I'm sorry for the kids you taught if that's how you responded to them if they ever expressed something.

That's a good one.

In college I took historiography classes: they study of studying history. My professor would come to class and say, "How do you know I'm not just making stuff up?" The classes were about analyzing sources, biases, and figuring out how historical narratives change with the times.

My immediate thought was "Why don't they teach history like this everywhere?"

Is he famous? You can at least claim "I used to get bulled by so and so."

Jay burr is his name. golden gloves guy. but it was deeply damaging to me man. he used to call my house and threaten to murder me in my sleep. I fought him and did ok but he was just better. the captain of the wrestling team in middle school was terrified of him and feared me after he saw how well I did against him.

I'm sure the guy was a psychopath or something.\\

but I was also utterly alone. no dad and no mom... I mean I had them but they were so fucked up that I just had no foundation. it took years for me to get over that experience. I hate when people say bullying is good. it set me back years and years.

I agree with you totally. I didn't mention meditation because it might be way too out there for most people. I mean look at the response I got for saying I think cooking classes would be great lol.

Meditation and meditative practices have probably been the most important thing I've learned in my life. The true evidence of divinity has been shown to me through meditation. But I'm sure any attempt at implementing meditation to school systems would be met with a lot of resistance.

That's how I studied certain things, most things actually.
We're responsible for our actions sir.

I made a lot of bad choices, but it wasn't necessarily due to what I wasn't taught, it was maybe a bit of pain mixed with arrogance...anger etc.

You did well against him, which means you within arms reach of beating his ass sir.
You just needed to take the steps to further your skill.

I did not have the knowledge or means to do so man. he was in boxing training five days a week for years. I did not have that option. there was no catching up. not every story ends with a happy ending. life is different than that sometimes. some kids are raised in a locked room and fucked by their dad man.... its not all rose colored glasses and rainbows. there is profound evil.

long term all things are turned to gold for those who turn to God but at the time? it was a living hell and a nightmare and it was NOT good.

Not a happy ending but you're twice the man he is or will ever be...that has to count for something to you sir.
