Ok so I went through and watched all of Conor's fights again because I was trying to remember if he usually fought that aggressively like he did against Nate. I know he puts a lot of pressure, but against Nate he was swinging for the fences over and over.
So after rewatching, I noticed some things, he fought more aggressive than usual and seemed somewhat emotional just trying to take Nate's head off immediately. In the past fights, he was aggressive, but he was more calculated, he picked his shots more rather than just swinging. Add to that the mental advantage he had from the mind games (which were missing in the last fight). I do think Nate was in his head before this fight.
The Conor having great cardio is a myth, in every fight I saw that went either deep into the first round or into the second, Conor was not looking fresh, but it didn't matter because at that point the opponent had already taken too much damage and they could not capitalize on a slowing McGregor. For the most part he was fighting at his own pace and as we all know, its a lot easier to keep a pace that is your own.
Nate was the perfect guy to exploit Conor, that insane cardio, pressure and durability were able to take advantage of a slowing Conor in that second round and we all saw what happened. The most telling fight to me besides Nate was both the Holloway fight and the Mendes fight. Injury aside, the Holloway fight was telling, he was not able to put Max away in the first and as the fight went on Max was able to score at moments and land some decent shots (even though the moments were few), he even dropped Mcgregor with a head kick in the third round, even if only for a split second. I think a rematch with current Holloway would be a very interesting matchup.
The Mendes fight I think has been broken down enough so i'll keep it brief, it was the real first time Conor was noticeably slowed, but it didn't matter because Chad was fucked way worse than Conor, had Chad had some more gas in that tank, we might have seen Conor in some deep shit for the first time in the UFC.
Aldo needs not apply, 13 seconds, beautiful counter by Mcgregor, nothing needs to be said.
Now in conclusion, Conor is a very good fighter, he wins at the mind games and puts a pressure on opponents, that even if he slows down, it doesn't matter because his opponent is fucked worse than him by that point enabling him to keep a good pace to not blow himself out and land the killing shots. Nate like I said was the perfect cryptonite and I believe guys like Frankie, RDA, Nate, and possibly Holloway in a rematch would give him fits. Durable, cardio machines with a high pressure.
