News Welsh FW Jack Shore announced his retirement at age 29

If your heart isn't into something it's best to stop doing it. Especially when that thing is fighting. He had a decent career. 17-3 overall and 6-3 in the UFC, plus Cage Warriors champion with a defense. Best of luck to him.
Yup.
There are guys like Chuck that simply can't hang em up, because they don't have much else going on. It's good to see someone have a (more than solid) career, and call it quits because they want to, and have their sights set on other things.

I was excited for his early fights, but he really lost his steam and was unrecognizable to me. I thought he could've been a contender at first. At least he's avoiding wasting time losing until he's cut.

Must be nice. I wish i could have retired when i was 29.

As a Welshman I always wanted Shore to be a success but genuinely - Brett Johns was better and more impressive. I never saw it with Shore, at all. He just seemed decent everywhere without being excellent anywhere. At least he's seen his limitations and knows it's time to bow out, seems a nice guy.

I don't know if that says more about Shore or Johns. I always was underwhelmed by Brett going back to his last Titan FC fight/his UFC debut. The calf slicer over Soto was the only time I felt impressed by him, and even then that read like a one-in-a-million occurrence than anything else. He was a perfectly decent fighter but a one dimensional wrestler from those parts was never going to get over the hump.

Now there's Oban who is a mix of both, not that great anywhere and not a strong finisher, fighting in a much weaker division though so he'll at least have his fair share of sustained success.

Yeah it seems the majority of Welsh prospects fall under the jack-of-all-trades banner and it doesnt surprise me. Most MMA gyms in Wales were formerly boxing gyms who branched out when MMA started getting popular. They don't have stellar guys training them, they're mainly trained by guys who've learned a bit of BJJ, a bit of wrestling but used to be pure boxing coaches.

Might sound crazy, but having wife and child he probably needed a stable income instead of prize fighting.
Less fighters should do that.

Well, it makes sense when you're making 80k/80k being a journey man to stay in, but Jack Shore was only making about 30k when he lost and with injuries and the UFC not having the ability to have guys fight 3x a year with any consistency...ontop of paying managers, agents, gym fees etc...it's not financially feasible. He's probably working some 60-80k job a year in Wales with benefits or going back to school type deal now.

Damn, was still considered an up and comer/ prospect after 9 years in the sport. Good luck to him though, No doubt he has made the right decision.

60k to 80 k a year with benefits? lol.

A hospital medical consultant barely makes 100K after 5 years at medical school and a further 7-8 years as a junior doctor.

Good luck to him. Gotta respect it when a guy knows he is done. Too many people in this sport going til the proverbial wheels fall off.

Is that in Wales or the US? My friends a Surgeons assistant, he's 31 and makes 300k a year. My roommate doesn't have a Bachelors and is only 29 making 150k in analytics for a decently large company. Last job I interviewed for didn't require a degree and was right around that. You can join the fire department or police force in some major cities here start out at 85k not including over time and hit 100-120k after 24 months as an annual salary.

Sounds insane someone with 13 years schooling in the medical field is barely making 100k.

Would've liked to have seen more of him at 135, but he had a solid career -- good on him and hope his coaching career is long and prosperous

We're a bit underpaid I reckon in the United Kingdom in any form of civil service. Not to complain too much because it's all relative of course but compared to a lot of other developed countries it's not good money and the hours can be stupidly long despite new contracts .

Just a sample from current advertised jobs inon the main recruitment website for doctors. To get to the 105,K (base salary for a consultant in paediatrics for example, takes 5-6 years medical school and currently 8 years of post graduate training. Therefore minimum 13 years of uninterrupted training. Definitely NOT the profession to get into to get rich quickly haha. There are ways to supplement income via private work etc but that's not routine for many and is already on top of a heavy work schedule.

Anyway, point is the average white collar salary is around 25k/yr and average blue collar salary around 28k/yr.

The junior doctors only had a recent increase in their salary after it was calculated their hourly rate was less than someone stacking shelves ib a supermarket lol.

I've no idea how much Jack Shore is earning but I hope it's a lot. He seems like a really decent chap!

I want to know more now...how much is rent on a 1 bedroom city in your nicer cities/areas, how much does cost of living differ from metro England cities? What's the cost of food like 1lb chicken/beef, eating out at a proper spot and also quick food like kebabs, fish and chips, a burger etc.

Shore is an extremely skilled and well rounded fighter but all his 3 losses to Simon, Brito, Zalal no shame losing to them showed a glaring athleticism deficit. He just physically can't compete with a certain level of fighter. He could have stuck around and picked up a lot of wins but he's being honest with himself that he wasn't ever gonna seriously contend or become champ.
That’s how I viewed him. Supremely talented technically just didn’t have the athleticism to be elite. Still surprised he retired. He could have had a solid career hovering around the top 15 making decent money
