The Witcher 3 vs. Dragon Age: Inquisition

No contest...W3, and I enjoyed DA:I...not really a fair battle...DA:I was made on last gen also...W3 was made for current gen...and last year wasn't as good for gaming as this year is turning out to be..DA:I probably wouldn't be in top 3 consideration for goty this year...maybe not even top 5...

The real battle will be W3 vs MGSV...current gen open world vs current gen open world...

Yep. A person with a different opinion. They do exist.

I agree with Bob Gray about W3's world being overrated. Apart from Skellige, a lot of the areas were generic fields and wooded areas. They felt big and empty.

Most maps in DAI were unique and memorable, whereas W3 was like a series of Hinterlands.

Posted this in the DA:I thread:

I like Witcher 3 but it hasn't really pulled me in like DA:I. I played the shit out of DA:I but I can't get myself to play Witcher 3 for more than like an hour at a time. The combat is more skill-based than DA:I but so far it's just not that fun to me. It's OK but I had more fun wih DA:I. I thought Witcher 3 was gonna pull me in but after about 5-6 hours I've kind of put it to the side for now.

Witcher 3 imo is technically the better game, but DA:I was more fun to me. I don't know if I'll finish Witcher 3. My friend has brought his PS4 over and played Witcher 3 and I enjoy watching him pplay it, but I just can't get myself to slam out a 2+ hour session and want to play more.

I don't think I should vote yet, maybe if I pick it up with more time invested I will have a different opinion but as of now I like DA:I more.

That's a tough one, they both excel at different things. I still havent finished W3, Im gonna hold off until I get my new monitor.

I found DA:I to be Bioware at it's best. An epic RPG with a great story, lots of fun choices regarding classes and skills, party banter, pretty fun combat and the whole Keep and War Table angle were great additions to the franchise that were executed well.

Witcher 3 is a different beast. Despite it's RPG it's really lacking in what many people enjoy about RPGs. Party choices, the skill system is fairly meh overall and combat is still a weak point. But what they nailed this time out was making you feel like a Witcher out in the world. Where DA: I had it's weak points in the side quests, that seems to be where W3 has excelled. Witcher contracts and random quests are the strong point in the game, and not so the story imo, which is fairly boring.

Despite it's billing as open world, W3 felt feels fairly contained to me. I don't really feel like I'm exploring an open world so much as a big map. I actually prefer DA: I and it's "Hub Based" open world for the sake of variety. Every map felt different and that's something W3 has been lacking. Towns and villages kind of feel the same. You got your quest board, blacksmith, alchemist and someone who needs a Witchers help. The world is big and open but I don't feel like there's a lot of variety in it.

Writing this out, I realize that I prefer DA: I by a wide margin. W3 is still a great game, but DA: I was a phenomenal Bioware type of RPG which is what I've always loved. W3 has moments of greatness, like The Bloody Baron quest line which is still the high point of the game for me. Oh, yeah, and Gwent, heh. But overall I do think it's getting a bit overrated.

I strongly disagree. W3 is best when you arent playing the story and you're going around picking up random shit to do. From what I've seen, nobody really gives a shit about Ciri.

Every random shit quest has a good story instead of 'bad ork attacking village, kill it'.

I tried skipping a lot of them. Not as easy as you would expect. There are areas in the game where you get a series of cutscenes within feet of each other. I found it ridiculous and impossible to remain immersed in the game.

There are plenty of story driven rpg's with in-game dialogue. Fallout 4 looks to be taking that idea to the next level. Obviously it is a sought after feature.

F4 looks like Fallout minecraft to me. Plus Bethesda can't write.

Every story and quest is different... They all have nuances. Including reading the shit you find like bandits writing love letters to their wives.

Witcher 3 by a landslide, and I highly enjoyed DAI. I would post a more detailed reply but I'm on my phone.

I dunno about "Every", but my point was the side quests are better than the central story.

Jesus, people are salty if you like a different RPG more than W3 apparently.

I actually couldn't get into either game - Dragon Age probably held my attention longer than The Witcher, but both paled in comparison to games like Skyrim or the original Dragon Age.

To be honest, the most recent crop of games have been let downs. There have been the occasional gem, i.e. Kerbil Space Program, Her Story, but those games earn high scores more for their originality than actual game play.

I don't know, maybe I'm getting older and can't get into games the way I used to. Given that The Witcher, DA:I, GTA V all earned such high praise, and I didn't like any of them speaks more to my waning interests than the actual quality of the game.

Witcher 3 slays Dragonage. DAI got boring. Witcher 3 keeps you engaged and even wanting more when its all over.

Not really a competition to me. I enjoyed Witcher 3 MUCH MUCH more than I did DA:I.

I just never really liked how the combat functioned in Dragon Age. I didn't like using the tactical camera all that much, I didn't like how some battles lasted a really long time because enemies had enormous amount of HPs. It just wasn't my thing.

I liked the story, but the gameplay just didn't keep me engaged. I might try it again because I'm about to finish Witcher 3.

I found the witchers world to be much more polished, much more engaging, and look MUCH better.

W3 has its weak points though. I can echo the cut scene thing. There were times where I felt like I was watching a movie, not playing a game. I also would have liked more weapon diversity. I know the whole lore thing is silver/steel swords for witchers, but it would have been cool to be able to really change your combat style.

When I found out there were only like 7 or 8 quests worth doing in Dragon Age: Inquisition I realized the game was nowhere near as good as I thought it was going to be when I started playing it. Still a good game with a very nice world to gaze at and explore but very flawed in many ways am 7 or 8 out of 10. TW3 is probably more like a 9 or 9.5 for me.

I'm really curious as to your reasons why W3 "pales in comparison" to the original dragon age ... or even skyrim for that matter.

That's actually one thing I loved about DAI was the crafting system. I used a Reaper class and you have to really concentrate on getting good equipment that benefits the class. So I had a lot of fun getting better equipment crafted and making my reaper even better.

apples and oranges for me.

Witcher 3 is kind of an action game in how it plays and how your character maneuvers.

Witcher 3 has a richer story and for me a better art style. There is a def lack of epic boss battles in the witcher though.

Dragon age gave me reasons for 5 play throughs. The dragon fights were epic and only the knight enchanter class felt OP. I remember seeing giants fight dragons. I love being part of a party and the leader of a movement. I loved having so many team mates at my disposal.

The witcher was excellent and I never felt it got repetitive. I did feel it was very easy though. Once my Quen was maxed I was untouchable. I really only liked maybe 2 armor sets in the whole game though.

I felt similarly disappointed with dragon age in that the max armor you could craft didnt look awesome. Dragon age 2 had nicer armor sets.

Witcher 3 had better pacing and I was mind blown when i saw skellige.
Dragon age kind of lost direction as far as the story went and none of the villains where very good. Corypheus sucked, the red templars sucked and the venatori sucked.

I loved seeing the gray wardens again.

I like the companions and the combat better in dragon age 3. I liked the story and the villains better in witcher 3.

This turned out to be even more of a curb stomping than I expected.

I wonder if this poll has a different results a few months later. Witcher 3 being the more recent release might be affecting this poll.
