Economy The [Wall / Government Shutdown] Megathread

Would you approve of Trump using emergency powers to build his wall?

  • Total voters

  • Poll closed .
You have many, many reasons to hate Trump, but not being able to follow through because of two-party idiocy is NOT one them.

Right but he promised to take care of this problem and I believe what my president says.

On a side note Trumps approval rating is right at 39%

This administration is an absolute disaster

The same people that are arguing for this stupid wall are the same people that say "we can't do anything to stop gun violence in America because there's already guns here"
These people bitch about any sort of potential legislation suggested to curb violence, but now they want a massive, expensive wall that doesn't even address what the actual issue is.

So many people on the right seem to completely lack imagination. Only see things in black or white.
Border security doesn't begin and end with a 2,000 mile long wall...especially when most of the drugs aren't being walked across the border on some poor family's backs

Wait... Trump is president. Illegals are still allowed to go to sanctuary cities? I thought Trump was going to clean all this up. I mean it’s been 2 years and he hasn’t done shit

Leftist intellect and lack of integrity on full display here folks...

it's not planes, did you read the article? They are coming through LEGAL ports, probably because we lack funding and personnel to manage the amount of people/vehicles coming through the LEGAL ports.

It's not him, its people in the trial that have no reason to lie, they said in the 90s over 95% of drugs came through tunnels

No i didnt read the article.

Dont really care what the article says either no offense.

I can't listen to him drone on at these kinds of press conferences for long. He just rambles. I feel dumber every second he keeps talking.
If I had a dollar for every time he said the words 'tremendous' or 'powerful' or 'beautiful', or 'who knew..?', I could pay for the wall myself.

The wall alone isn't enough and I have always said that. A better physical barrier is certainly a useful addition to border security, though.

The point of the wall is to direct people to the legal ports of entrt. Every day when I go home I use the door. I don’t slam into my wall until the brick gives

but at what cost/resources? I'd rather put that cost into the existing port search/seizure and technology to patrol the borders than a wall that really won't do much , kind of like the war on drugs

a wall will direct people to tunnels and human traffickers , the legal ports have already been proven to be trash with most drugs already coming into the country through them.

He was blocked by 9th circuit Court judges to deny money to sanctuary cities.
Idk if you were being obtuse or simply ignorant on the matter.

Oh, sorry. I missed all of your research laden posts. Let me go back and check them out.
Good read, TLDR a wall will do nothing to stop/slow/deter drug smuggling.

In the middle of a peaceful green valley where the salt air drifts in clean and fresh from the ocean, it can be hard to remember the chaos.

Drug shootouts. Smugglers scrambling down the canyons. When congressmen wanted tours of the area, they’d have to see it from the window of a helicopter because Border Patrol couldn’t guarantee their safety.

Then came the fences. One perimeter, then a secondary. The fences helped the Border Patrol reclaim this little sliver of the country.

But the fences did not stop the drug smuggling. With a near-infinite supply of money and resources on the other side, drugs continue to move under, around and through anything the country builds.

No wall will stop them.

After the government built fences in San Diego, drug smugglers turned to the ocean, underground tunnels and, most commonly, the ports of entry. Last year more than 90 percent of the drug seizures happened in the port of entry, where millions of cars drive into San Diego from Mexico every year.

They are going so far out of our area of operations that we can’t even cover that area,” says Kurt Nagel, a marine interceptor for Customs and Border Protection’s air and sea patrol. “We are trying to set up task forces in San Francisco to give us a hand. … Right now with how far they are going, we can’t keep up.”

After the border fences in San Diego were built, law enforcement noticed more pangas — small, open fishing boats that run on outboard motors — abandoned on the city’s beaches.

“We were completely overwhelmed,” says Unzueta, the retired ICE investigator.

When agents focused on pangas, the smugglers began using expensive recreational vessels that blend in with the boats San Diegans use for weekend fishing or scenic cruises.

Border Patrol agents have to figure out which ones are coming from Mexico.

“A lot of it is just knowing the people, knowing the seasons, knowing what fish is in season, what kind of tackle you use to go sea fishing as opposed to lake fishing,” Nagel says. “Smugglers sometimes mix that up.”

If a wall is built, don’t expect it — or the Border Patrol — to stop the flow of drugs.

“It would be like trying to say that a police department isn’t successful unless they stop 100 percent of the shoplifting,” says Hernandez of Customs and Border Protection. “People are going to shoplift no matter what you do. You can put security guards at the door, you can put security guards at every aisle and people are still going to shoplift. Same principle here. We can put barriers and we can slow them down but no matter what we do people are still going to try.”

You're insane if you think massive amounts of illegal drugs aren't being muled over the border by illegals. That is one of the most amazing tricks that the left has pulled, IMO, convincing people that illegals aren't doing anything nefarious at the border and that more border security is just a waste. I would wager far more comes over the border in backpacks than in planes.

We have known for decades how they move their shit, and it's not on mules over the border. That is extremely ineffective and small scale. You can move tons, I repeat TONS, through tunnels, boats, and other points of entry. Cartels have been caught moving product, weapons and people in submarines.

Has Trump said a single word about shoring up our other ports of entry? A one time expenditure of 9 bil has been proposed to shore up our commercial seaport system. Crickets....

As I've said all along- Just a wall? No. The wall is just part of better security and overall immigration control.

Walls work in other part of the world.

There is not as much demand and money to be made getting into other countries though.

Is there funding for better security or just the wall?

Cruz wants to use the El Chapo Act to pay for the wall but in his criminal case El Chapo tells how they transported the drugs - wall did not stop them. They used tunnels, submarines and boats, planes and bribed officials to get drugs through ports of entry.

***DISCUSSING CURRENT WALL - NOT ANYTHING REGARDING POTENTIAL NEXT WALL***

Currently - I don't think it's fenced all the way across the whole country

But looking on google maps here it seems to be made of random materials. Some parts are a tall fence and others are a shorter fence with barbed wire at the top - varying heights and I seen what looked like random pieces of sheet metal as a border in one part - covered in graffiti etc

Just a huge inconsistent ugly looking mess with a shifting hodge podge of materials and doesn't look very effective at all

Gimme a carpet and a later and I can climb that shit

Anyone have details on what the existing wall looks like or any details?

Basically looking for any information / facts - interesting stuff regarding current border wall that exists now

Get a flying carpet and you could skip the later.

After construction, the new wall will look like this:
