The UFC would've been better off just letting Ngannou box

It would help a lot to know the PPV numbers for Francis vs Gane. We know PFL did somewhere in the neighborhood of 10k buys with Francis headlining their event. Maybe it made sense to the UFC at the time to not throw piles of money at Francis on what might not give them very much of a return at all.

Francis goes to boxing, loses, and tastes boxing money so then wants bigger paydays. Negative all around for the UFC.

Not doubting you or anything but source??? If the the event really did 10k buys I'd like to know why they'd publish that number

- No silly one liners
- No bottom shelf whisky
- No funny sports net interviews with nate diaz
Alex has none of what you listed either though (unless Chama counts as a one liner) and says even less than Francis yet he is a bigger draw somehow when they are both finishing machines and have origins stories that you would find in books and movies. Make it make sense.

Francis chases money, Alex chases Glory. Fans can recognize the difference.

Because Alex had a rivalry with the most popular UFC fighter (Israel Adesanya) which made more people pay attention to him.

Alex visually sticks out also. He has a stern, no nonsense face, has a unique ritual walk during his entrance to the ring, and wears Native American war paint . Alex Peireira comes off more like a movie character than Ngannou, which helps tremendously for drawing.

I know, and that was one of the reasons why he didn't re-sign. Those contracts lock you in P diddy style
When you're the biggest organization around you can include those types of clauses in the contracts. Smaller promotions do have contracts that aren't exclusive in some cases.

IIRC Franci$ wanted to box with zero involvement from UFC whatsoever. No purse splitting or revenue share, both of which they had for Conor/Floyd. Daner had no incentive to agree.
I don’t recall reading anything that said Francis turned down an offer from UFC to co-promote or share revenue. I don’t think that happened. I don’t think the UFC considered it at all. They maintained a hard line at “Francis cannot box at all while under UFC contract”.

Ngannou made the right choice and easiest to get money, but it's such a dumb decision. Not only did Ngannou not want a 3 fight contract, which was the shortest UFC would allow, but there is a possibility Ngannou would've KO'd Jones and left to PFL. He didn't want to have an exclusive contract.

Now if it was just an allowance for boxing, might have been different. But the HW division would've been just as fucked as Jones injury was, maybe more. Jones fight could've been 2 in a row as well for a rematch, then the 2 boxing matches. Aspinall would've been shafted hard as well.

Ngannou lost to Lewis in the most boring fight ever... Male or Female... was shown up in boxing which he couldn't afford to happen if he wanted to pursue that at high levels long term.
now he's in arguably the #3 MMA promotion crushing cans after the others laughed in his face due to his unreasonable demands... his stock is sinking... the UFC doesn't want to be tied to that... Nor a fighter that gets beaten every time he tries something else... Then on top of it all pisses and moans at every turn about how he could be doing better else where. And when he gets the chance to make a massive carreer out of it... blows it. Some Peoples heads are just too fat to deal with...

Well, one of the arguments you hear a lot here is "if you don't like the contract, don't sign" and francis did just that.
