Soccer is the goat sport and premier sport in the planet, MMA is a d level sport that can never be in the same league as Soccer.
Yeah, actually, just in terms of money involved and international popularity, the sole Premier League might be above the UFC, and maybe MMA as a whole.
I obviously love MMA, but football has been here forever, it's not just absurdly popular, it's like boxing : more than a century of history, legends, etc.
I was 11 when we won the 98 world cup, and then another one 20 years later. I don't know if guys like Dana can fathom the impact it had on the country, especially in 98 where it was played at home. It was the 90's, life was really nice, but after the 12th of july, the whole country was blasted by a wave of euphoria that lasted entire months.
And we're "just" France. In South America, those people live and die for football, the passion is crazy. German fans are known to fill their stadium like no other, and I won't even talk about England, Italy or Spain, there'd be so much to say.
Money though... it's becoming absurd. Money has been here for a long time, but It's having a negative impact on the sport itself at this point.
Fighters need to be paid more, but no-one needs to be paid 1 fucking billion dollars, or euros, etc. (Especially Mbappé, who's our national treasure, but whose net worth is already around 200M lol)
Only individuals, like Conor, can be as popular as football stars, but MMA versus football, nope. Moreover Conor is obviously the exception more than the rule, and no disrespect to his career, but he's no Messi.
TL;DR : MMA isn't, and will never be nearly as popular as football.
That being said, MMA totally rules, and it's progressing at a steady pace IMO. It's still a young sport, and I find it exciting to see it evolving.
