I wonder if this is the first time that "Fight of the Night" went to a fight on the UFC Fight Pass prelims (and hence a large fraction of the audience didn't see it).
It might be, but as the UFC continue to push Fight Pass, I think this digital distribution platform will get even more exciting matches in the future. They do want the hardcore fans who subscribes to Fight Pass to feel like we're getting our money worth, that means fights that worth logging on to see.
The UFC knows very well the VanZant/Curran and Doo Ho Choi's UFC debuts are something that many actual MMA fans looking forward to see, and they delivered as expected. I wouldn't be surprised if they soon will be promoted to Main Cards and bypass FS1 Prelims entirely like Juliana Lima vs. Nina Ansaroff at Fight Night 56.
Who knows, the Fight Pass Prelims segment might expand in size and get its own semi-prestigious "headliner" with a hefty paycheck in the near future for notable draws, something that the UFC have been doing for PPV Prelims for years (and Sherdoggers are just beginning to grasp).
