The Truth: Colby's, Masvidal's & Dan Lambert's/Paulino Versions

I don't get this. Doesn't the gym have a contract with him?

This is a pretty fucking stupid situation for adult athletes and businessmen.

Coach: 5%
Colby: OK
Coach: Promise? :(
Colby: Yes

<CerseiPlotting>

The coach wasn't employed by the gym, he was Jorge's personal striking coach. The 5% isn't in dispute either, it's just how much Colby actually made for the RDA fight.

the whole not resigning him was probably a classic ufc negotiating technique to try to lowball him with his next contract, you don't put a guy you plan to cut on main event against a highly ranked and highly beatable guy

What fight are you talking about, RDA or Maia? Neither were main events.

Dang, so it sounds like Mas is just lying. Lambert confirmed Shelby told him they were not going to resign him and the striking coach confirmed he got 5K, not "not a cent" as Mas stated.

He probably made 350k which would be about 200k after taxes. 5k is 2.5% of 200k and 17500 is 5% of 350k. Maybe over a certain amount, they increase the percentage?
Taxes shouldn't be a factor, he would pay with pretax dollars and deduct what he pays the coach as an expense, and the coach would have to pay taxes on what he received. Otherwise it'd be double taxation.

Both Jorge and Colby said that there was a handshake agreement between them and the coach. I don't think Jorge meant that Colby didn't pay anything, he was saying Colby didn't pay what he owed. So Jorge said he paid 12k, which makes sense b/c that would be whats owed if Colby paid him 5k.

was talking about maia, thought it was main, probably got confused with maia shields fight, but still co main and on a 5 fight win streaks and not getting resign? did that ever happen ?

Why would anyone pay a single striking coach 5% of a high payday? That doesn't make sense to me. I'm sure Colby has a bunch of different coaches.

Since Paulino apparently didn't have a contract, maybe he said something like "Alright, I'll train you - you give me 5 from your purse." thinking that was a starting point in negotiations ... and Colby said okay. Paulino thought he made off big with his 5% while Colby thought he meant 5k.

Big drama show. Hope either one gets finished or even a double KO.

In the big picture it always seemed like Dan Lambert really liked Colby, and so many at ATT were the ones who had problems with him. Probably because Colby was shit talking them all,and didnt do that with Dan. I've literally never seen a situation quite like this.

Like, when Chael decided to open his mouth and talk shit, like any sane person,he did not have to talk anything about his training partners.

Dan Lambert owns the gym but he doesn't do the training. Mike Brown is the ATT coach for Colby. Paulino isn't a coach for ATT. 17k is a bit high from a person who isn't a real champ yet. Colby still has to pay his MMA and conditioning coaching. Even someone like Jones paid his striking coach around 7k.

Someone already posted this but it still doesn't make sense that they wouldn't have any sort of a contract. His employment status is irrelevant, he's still offering a service in a pro gym for money.

This is like publicly arguing that you got less money for a drug deal, cause there are taxes n shit.

Like isn't this incriminating?

Jorge is basically saying publicly on video that his coach friend is making handshake, under the table, deals in a gym.

But TS, this part in your conclusion "It's true, Sean Shelby told Dan Lambert they weren't going to re-sign Colby Covington after the last fight on his contract unless something changed." was just there out of your head?

Neither Masvidal nor his coaches said Colby needed to change his personality.

17 k is close to some fighters show money. That’s crazy expensive, even if Jorge believes in this coach this has the slight scent of an attempted rip off gone wrong. “I got this dude, his striking sucks but he’s good. You could make some good money off him I know him let me talk to him”

Crazy how the org will straight up say "you're beating guys we want to promote but the fans aren't getting behind you so we aren't gonna resign you". That's like, 1 step away from actually working the outcomes of the fights.

It’s still a business at the end of the day but it’s nothing new to the UFC. Jon Fitch was 15-3 in the UFC and they still didnt resign him because he was “boring” and going to just beat just about everyone but the top 2-3 170lbers so they let him go
