But at the end of the day, Jones could've fought at heavyweight anytime he wanted to. UFC being the clown show that it is, he could've jumped to the front of the line with an immediate title shot any time he wanted to...Which he finally did after several years of hype and bullshit. By 'coincidence', literally days after Francis parted ways with the UFC.
He didn't even try to hide jumping at the opportunity.
And isn't it funny that the only compelling fight at HW at the time was Jones/Francis and Francis turned down $8m to fight him? See? You can spin it both ways.
Obviously Jones wants to go straight to a title shot. He's the GOAT (arguably) and plenty of people go for champ-champ title shots jumping the line. He's done enough to earn that nod more than anyone else, similar to GSP and Conor. It's both a what you've done for the organization / will the fight sell issue. There's nothing wrong with Jones looking out for himself above others. Francis, too, by the way. Nothing wrong with bouncing when he did to get rich. But assigning 100% blame to either is ridiculous. They both played a part. It is hilarious to me that people who are admittedly Jones haters blame him for both ducking Francis as a challenger and ducking Tom as a champion. Nobody ever has any responsibility in it, only Jones, lol.
Again that's my problem with the video. You can identify Tom is the #1 contender and you want him to get the shot, but from Jones perspective, why would he? Stipe is a less risky fight and he can make millions and retire. Tom is a legitimate threat, even if I pick Jones over him. Then he has to survive that and THEN try to fight Stipe, avoid injury etc. when what? Stipe is 45? Makes no sense. The sensible thing for Jones (as an advocate for his career/health/legacy/etc.) is to fight and beat Stipe, and if healthy, fight Tom win or lose and go out on his shield either way. Jones is approaching 37 too, he isn't a young man. This is when the downhill turn occurs. Jones is also correct in pointing out that if he and Stipe want the fight, they've earned it. A combined idk, 20 fucking title defenses, the arguable GOAT in both divisions for the UFC and made the company tens of millions. This is the last chance for it to ever happen. He should fight Tom, it's the right thing to do. But if this Stipe fight is ever going to happen is has to happen
NOW. And preferably before Jones got injured -- but at this point it's now or never and the fight
will sell. Tom or his advocates crying that Tom earned an immediate title shot in comparison to Stipe/Jones earning a face off in the cage is an uphill battle. Tom can fight for the title after Stipe/Jones, Stipe/Jones can't happen in 2-3 years.
Also, in that video the whole "Jones fought bloated middleweights" once again was perpetuated. I wish I could find my original post, but literally all of Jones' opponents were LHW or HW champions or both in the major organizations (UFC/WEC/SF/PRIDE/Bellator/etc.) or at least competed the majority of their careers at LHW/HW. with only Chael, Lyoto and Rashad being MW competitors. Chael was a true MW, but Rashad/Lyoto switched classes due to age and injuries.
Ah, found it. Excuse the nerdiness.
[UFC LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION] Rampage Jackson: Fought at heavyweight both 1999-2000 and 2015 onward.
[UFC LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION] Lyoto Machida: Fought at heavyweight before LHW, then moved to LHW and won the title. He was then eviscerated by Jon Jones and to avoid Jon Jones he emasciated himself to get to middleweight. He returned to LHW when he left the UFC and didn't have to fight Jon Jones.
[UFC LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION, PRIDE MIDDLEWEIGHT (205LB) GRAND PRIX CHAMPION] Shogun Rua: Fought at 205 in PRIDE and won the title, fought in UFC at 205 and won the title, fought at Heavyweight in PRIDE in 2006.
[BELLATOR LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT AND HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION] Ryan Bader: fought Jones at 205, fought in Bellator at 205 and 265 and won the titles in both divisions.
[IFL LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION] Vladimir Matyushenko: Fought at HW from 1997-2001, fought for the UFC LHW title against Tito Ortiz.
[WEC HEAVYWEIGHT GRAND PRIX WINNER, ONEFC HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION] Brandon Vera: Fought at heavyweight from 2002-2008, 2013-2022. Won multiple titles at heavyweight.

Chael Sonnen: Fought at MW, LHW and HW. Primarily MW.

Alexander Gus: Fought at LHW and HW as of 2020. Not a champion of either division because Jon Jones existed.
OSP: Light heavyweight all of his career with recent heavyweight competition.
