The timeline of Jon Jones refusing to fight Ngannou

Jon Jones
"I'll need Deontay money against Francis"

Also Jon Jones
"Yeah I'll fight Gane for my usual peanuts"

Jon Jones
"I'll need FU money against Aspinall"

Also Jon Jones
"Yeah I'll fight Stipe and Pereira and Randy Couture and anyone not named Aspinall for my usual pay"

Everyone else: WTF

Wtf are you talking about?? Jon fought Gane under the same contract he would have fought Francis. He came to new terms of his existing deal and there were no money issues. BTW, his "usual peanuts" vs Gane was 3 mill + 4 mill bonus + PPV same with Stipe.

So why does he want 30 mil suddenly ?

At the time Jones was a LHW with way bigger accomplishments than Ngannou. He never had a thick frame and it is more risky for him to fight at HW because it's just not the weight class for him. If I was Jones, I would stay away from that fight too and ask for a shit ton of money to fight Ngannou.

When you are the A side you can do as you please.

BS. Jones was already talking smack about HWs when Cain Valesquez was the man of the division.

Like them or hate them, I would've really liked to see the Saudis throw $30 million at Jon Jones to fight Ngannou and see what he says.
lol easy money ….. Francis grappling sucked when he was concentrating on mma ….two years of being basically a boxer isn’t gonna help

So why does he want 30 mil suddenly ?
Hes the most accomplished fighter in the history of the sport

Hes in the twillight of his career with no other super stars in the promotion and wants REAL pro-athlete money?

But he was a-ok to fight Stipe and Pereira under his current contract? I didn't hear a 30 mil price tag for those opponents lol

I think the only thing anyone could say about that was............He needed to fight Gane to get the belt(signed a new contract just before that). Stipe seemed to be a very personal quest of his(it was obvious Jones puts Stipe on pedestal of one of the best HW's ever to do it). It has been a long time since the UFC brass was in good graces of the Stipe camp. So they weren't going to do shit to make that fight happen.

Now when it comes to Tom, it seems pretty simple. He is trying to leverage everything he can against the UFC that rarely ever budges for anyone. It is probably Jones last fight and he wants to make as much as he can on it. He knows this is the best selling fight the UFC can make at any weight class and he wants a little bigger piece of the pie.

We all bitch about UFC paying shit to fighters and when a fighter takes a stance we bitch about that also.

P.S.: If Jones has zero interest fighting Tom he'd probably just turn in the belt and retire. In fact I think the UFC would push for that if they knew without a doubt Jones is done fighting.

Yeah I don't understand this thing with Jones people have with the timeline.

  • Ngannou fought Gane Jan 2022

  • Ngannou had knee surgery and was out for the entire 2022 while waiting for his contract to expire in Jan 2023

  • Jones/UFC announced that Jones was looking to come back 2-3 months Ngannou's contract expiration. Reports coming out in Nov 2022 about Jones even returning in March 2023 going against either Ngannou or Blaydes if Ngannou couldn't fight https://bleacherreport.com/articles...for-ufc-285-ngannou-blaydes-eyed-as-opponents

  • Ngannou and UFC can't come to terms Jan 2023

  • UFC announces Jones vs Gane right after Ngannou (UFC also reveals Jones is under a new contract which was done sometime before)

I dont know the economics of negotiation

Im guessing Jones gets a cut of the gate and maybe PPV

Stipe (a star) was at MSG and Alex is (was) a huge star. Those fights pay on the back end.

No one really knows who Tom is, so cash up front for a high risk, unknown-up-and comer?

That would be my guess anyway.

What does he mean by Deontay money?
As much as Wilder was paid to fight fury, which was around $30 million.

Jon has never sold anywhere close to the number of PPVs as would be required to acquiesce such an obscene amount for one fight.

Brock was given $8 million + PPV points for 200 and Brock sells 3-5x as much as Jon.

Isnt Jones set for life anyway?

Can we please stop the 30 million talk unless we have actual hard evidence Jones is sitting in a room with Hunter Campbell saying he will not fight unless they present him with a 30 million check.

5 fucking years I've had to read about Jon Jones and this mythical 30 million contract because of an off handed comment. At this point that number is just a meme getting repeated in the news cycle like its brand new news "bRo u hEar jOnes aSking fOr 30 mIlLiOn????"

Jones saw it as too risky. If he was that confident he wouldve fought him

This article from Nov 22 says a lot and pretty much proof that Jones was locked in.

Well he agreed to fight him, he was ready to go for UFC 285. Francis was the one who didnt accept the fight.

Yeah just like Tom is refusing to fight him now, right?

Tom and Jones is a completely different situation with the fight in negotiations right now.

You clearly don't know the situation with Ngannou and Jones, so I would keep quiet. Ngnannou himself came out on Ariels podcast and said himself he was offered the Jones fight for UFC 285 and declined it. Jon fought on the event vs a different opponent after Francis declined, was stripped and left.
