Terminator vs Matrix

1st Matrix was great. 1st Terminator was good but the sequel T2 was better. While each sequel from.Matrix went from Bad to unwatchable
 
I know T1 scene for scene i could literally play the movie out in my head. Matrix is awesome movie though.
 
Terminator it was straight forward with what it wanted to do, and it did that thing extremely well. The Matrix had some cool visuals but tired too lean to heavily on the philosophical BS.

It was best actor nominee caliber for that year in my opinion. Just the wrong genre(s) and a completely unknown actor.

The entire thing doesn't hold together if you don't actually believe Reese is a traumatized soldier from a future that doesn't exist. It would be almost like not believing Tom Hanks was actually on an island in Cast Away.

Motivated Mike with the right director was a powerhouse.

He bet heavy on an understated novel to movie adaptation called In a Shallow Grave around 1987/88 and played a guy with a burned face in a movie with little to no action and all drama and character stuff and the whole thing really didn't translate to the screen, and if he did serious character work it didn't really come through the make-up. Save for the Abyss and Tombstone - super-motivated and back under top tier direction - he was never quite the same again it seemed.

It can be hard to see the guy that cared about Reese and Coffey and Johnny Ringo so much in most of the crap he's been making for the last 25 years.

I've probably said this before in these discussions, but it's amazing the world building that is packed into just a few minutes. You get such a small window into that future world, and it's so compelling they've been able to put the back of the franchise on it for decades. Even after all the disappointments people still go see these movies, because in the back of their mind they're thinking this time that desolate future world will be fully realized.

That's the ultimate leave them wanting more. Terminator is somehow simultaneously the perfect film balanced in every way, but it also sparks the imagination and leaves you hungry to see more of that world. Annnnnd to bring it back full circle all of that is because of the performance of Michael Biehn.

Yeah just the first five seconds of where this clip is cued shows how much he put into Reese. Exhausted, spent, you can see that he knows the kid doesn't really get the magnitude of what's going on, but he'll still play war the kid for half a second but not raise the gun enough to create danger. That's five seconds with no lines.

Meanwhile in Genisys...

So atmospheric too. Everything is smoky and dirty, people look sick and hungry and on edge. Compare that to Genysis where everyone looks well fed and clean with perfect hair and makeup
