Television The Star Trek Thread V6.0

But why is season 3 supposedly so much more like proper Star Trek if they filmed it back to back. Did they hire a new showrunner in the one week inbetween. What changed ?
Yeah they hired season 3 showrunnernTerry Metalas, before they even shot season 2. Akiva Goldsman Season 2 showrunner, was also Creating and co-show running Strange new worlds at the time, so knew he wouldn't have time to do season 3. Terry Metalas worked on the first episode of season 2, then basically went off to create his own writer's room and crew. He convinced Patrick Stewart that the TNG crew didn't get a proper send off in Nemesis, and that season 3 should be an epic 10 hour final film.

Ah good info, thanks. That's interesting that they shot it back to back and with a different show runner.
Yeah showrunners make all the difference. They build and lead the writer's room. Terry Metalas is a big Star Trek fan, got his first break under Brannon Braga while he was on Voyager and then Enterprise.

I watched the 1st episode of Picard, Season 3. These are my thoughts.

The filmmakers use warm and cold filters to mute the colors, which yields a dull visual experience, as opposed to vibrant and exciting. On top of the filters, each and EVERY scene is dim. The ship's exterior is boxy and the interior is, to put mildly, uncomfortable.

The script is basic.

The character that appears to be involved with drugs does nothing for the show. Picard, Riker, Crusher and 7 of 9 are all excellent. Ensign La Forge is one of the more interesting characters, who has a grand total of 15 seconds onscreen. I liked the flute and the Romulan lady at the beginning of the episode, but Picard would just go to Crusher if she needed help. There would be no debate. Why? Because he's Captain Jean Luc Picard of the Starship Enterprise. That's why. You better get it right. And it must be said, Picard and Riker would have way more gravitas than they are shown here (conspiracy or not) by some random noname Captain.

My impression is that if you don't like Star Trek, your favorite music genre is 1990's grunge, and your drugs of choice happen to be downers, you may love Picard. Picard is more like an underdeveloped version of Blade Runner masquerading as Star Trek. Watching this episode of Picard felt like listening to Alice In Chains on loop for 60 minutes. I would rather watch Spock's Brain all day for a week then to re-watch Picard Episode 1, Season 3.

I'm looking forward to the second episode.

Night and day difference from season 2, so much better, ep 2 keeps it (mostly) up.. Though the part of the curly haired chick looking for someone in that dive bar & all that, that suxed TBH, could all have been excluded, I skipped it all. But the Picard part is fun.

Seeing as how YouTubers that literally make a living by shitting on nuTrek have said season 3 is great I thought I’d give it a shot, but I have to say I thought episode 2 sucked.

Whhhhelp... Episode 2 was aight. It feels more like a long movie than a show which I'm fine with. The drug parts I'm not a fan of as they feel too present era. One thing that sets or rather used to set Star Trek apart from other sci-fi is that everything had a distinct look, feel and sound and in my opinion the Star Trek of old handled drugs/drug addiction better because it felt different than our time. Even the dialogue and the way people spoke was different on purpose, this is too "on the nose". This feels more generic sci-fi with a Star Trek coat of paint but for now I can rock with it because enough elements of it are done decently. This season so far is a vast improvement over the first two seasons. I'm hoping the captain of the Titan and the villain have more going for them than meets the eye. The captain seemed a little better this episode but I feel he could better fleshed out. The "villain with overpowered ship" is played out, the look and power of that ship harken back to Nemesis which is a bad movie, but again, I'll rock with it for meow, it's holding my attention.

All in all I'm sticking with it so far this season and despite my misgivings I'm looking forward to the next episode.

Not gonna lie, this was what we always imagined Worf to be like.

Yeah, I always found it weird when humans could beat up klingons so easily, this is definitely the threat level I would imagine them to actually possess

Yeah, he basically lost every fight he ever had on the bridge of the Enterprise.

Not gonna lie, five o’clock shadow on a Ferengi bothered me.
It was a little weird, but I rewatched it, and it grew in me a little. The overall makeup was well done. I didn't realize but the actor played Pyro in the Xmen movies.
