Television The Star Trek Thread V6.0

I appreciate your passion as a fan of Star trek - I am a fan too

But I can't accept this new material no matter how often you spin things to feel right, they just don;t

I guess we have to agree to disagree on this new show

Hey, does anyone know how Rotten Tomatoes is calculating their audience score? It says "Percentage of viewers who rate this show 3.5 stars or higher" but looking through a number of pages in the reviews, I'm seeing that by far the most common scores are either a half star or one star, not 64% of people rating it 70% or higher. Maybe over the 1721 reviews it ends up being that higher number, but a quick ten page glance makes me wonder if there isn't a hidden addition to how they calculated that 64%.
You finally noticed that?

The algorithm is simple, dude: they score a movie whatever Disney tells them to score a movie.

OK, but you yourself have said you only watched the first few episodes. Perhaps a better approach, would be to judge the show as a whole, after we learn the story? The show is not perfect by any means, but I am enjoying it, and curious to see where the characters will end up. The first few episodes of TNG were pretty awful, but they improved over time, and even fans who hated it initially, eventually started to enjoy it. TNG would have been doomed, in the internet echo chamber era...

Hey now I watched the first 3 episodes give me some credit

I don't care how much gold is at the end of the tunnel - the ride was not inviting

I don't subscribe to needing to watch 20 episodes of something to hope it gets good later, they failed to do their job right out of the gate

You can stay on the ride and hope it gets better but I'm out :)

PS even the start of TNG, encounter at fairpoint etc gave hope in humanity

3 episodes into picard humanity sucks and I want to slit my wrists

Everything will work out great in the end, very hopeful future...
except millions of Romulans will still be dead because the Federation let them die.

Full disclosure, I haven't watched it yet. Will at the end of the month when it is done.

Are you suggesting that to not have the jarring experience I'm seeing countless long time fans experience I might have to do a bunch of preparatory reading? So, kind of like doing my homework so I can put everything going on into context? If this is what you're saying, do you think this is a good move for something that started as a TV show, continues as a TV show, and that TV show often treats the novels as non-canon? I used to read some Trek novels then figured out that most of them were basically fanfiction, since they were not treated as canon, so I've largely stopped since then. Would be a weird move to have a novel be required reading to really get one of the new shows.

Yep - it's a terrible thing

Further reading should be something a fan would do to enrich the material - not support it entirely

If a show can't stand on it's own legs it's garbage

I'm still going to judge it on its own merits. I don't particularly like the idea of having to read a book in order to get the backstory for a show.

I have seen shows I like decide to suddenly take a dark and gritty turn though (Stargate: Universe) and didn't like it... We'll see. End of the month.

Of all the shows to try to become dark for no reason

Star Trek - Like the most uplifting positive view of the future type show ever, it's entire foundation

They’re doing the same shit with Star Wars. If you want answers to basic questions like where did the First Order come from or whatever you need to read novels or comics or some shit. It’s absurd.

And then you get accused of not being a real fan cause you just want to enjoy a cohesive self contained show without having to do untold hours of homework

So, safe to say this show sucks? I saw the first episode, but decided to wait to see how it turns out before binging it. I started watching The Expanse, and it's a really good sci-fi show. It even made me go back and start playing the Mass Effect series again.

ENT ep "Desert Crossing".

Captain Archery and Commander Toker are invited to a camp full of terrorists led by Mr. Krabs, and they escape a bombardment by the Bairg by fleeing into the desert.

Porthos takes a walk.

Archery ponders whether to help the terrorists or gtfo without helping.

Tits McGee must deal with the oppressive government in the meantime. Archery and Toker are dying of heat exhaustion and dialogue overdose.

Hallucinations in the desert, belligerence in space.

In the end Mr Krabs has to eat a dick, and Porthos makes a poopy.

Picard is not Star Trek.

And the sheer fucking hubris displayed by those who suggest it is, disgusts me.

ENT ep "Two Days, Two Nights"

Captain Archery, Porthos, Commander Toker, Lt. Snobby, the black guy, and hot hot Hoshi go down to Risa for vacation.

Meanwhile, doctor Phlox hibernates for a few days.

Archery has a room a cumshot away from a chick who has a dog. That goes nowhere.

Toker and Snobby get robbed.

Black guy hurts himself on the mic during a rap battle.

Hot hot Hoshi gets some root from a guy with a thing on his face.

It's not required reading, but it definetly has made the story much more enjoyable for me. It explains how the Federation is in the situation it is in, and the various parties and influences involved. Star trek is now bringing all the TV, movies, books and comics under one group, and are to be considered Canon now.

I'm fine with people who disagree about the show, but I don't understand how you can condemn a show, that now up to its 8th episode, by only watching the first 2 or 3 episodes? Maybe do like your doing and watch it all in one sitting, then make up your mind, instead of watching 2 parts of a 10 parts season arc, then start bashing the show.

This isn't TNG, and they haven't claimed it is. People claim it too political, or the Federation wouldn't act a certain way. Star Trek has always been about the politics of the day. I understand some may not agree with those politics, but this is nothing new to Star Teek6
