Television The Star Trek Thread V6.0

I just started watching Orville and I gotta say I'm having shitloads more fun than what Star Trek has become.

And I hate Seth McFarland and Family Guy but he does a more human feeling version of trek

Tng and other treks were not human enough cause Gene Roddenberry thought humans would have evolved past emotions or something.

But in Orville they have real emotions, it's like taking people today and throwing them 400 years in the future - it's great!

I'm a huge fan of Star Trek and watched them all before Discovery too, hate modern trek. Love orville
I think Orville sucks too. It's not great satire, and its not great sci-fi/action. It's pretty much just "luke warm" on either front.

I'm enjoying the shit out of this show

My fave ep so far is when the dr dates the robot

That was an amazing comedic exploration

Much better than any drivel Discovery can produce

I mean most fans agree, Orville has its heart (and production values and episode structure) in the right place.

I view Discovery, just like the Abrams movies, as an 'enabling failure'. Without JJ, Star Trek would have been dead. Discovery, with all its pretty obvious inherent issues, convinced CBS that there is sufficient potential to expand the Star Trek universe. We will be getting Picard, which I believe will be much closer to what fans of the old series may be looking for. We will be getting Lower Decks, which I am positive is going to be absolutely awesome (even if quite different). In essence, yes, I think Orville is much more fun and more Trek than Discovery. But I am still glad it exists because it gives us the chance to get the Star Trek we deserve.

And I think the Trek world is richer with the existence of Orville.

I regret not getting into Orville sooner

But I really enjoy they tread it like a workplace job with real people doing real lockerroom talk - like chatting gossip - all the things that come with it

Humans have not evolved beyond today

Gene Roddenberry wanted humans to be emotionless in TNG

Remember the ep where Diana Troy got impregnated by some alien and had a sun that grew up and left the same episode?

In the end Diana was DEVISTATED and crying and Riker was just kinda looking at her

All sterile and cold

My wife was actually watching with me for this ep and yelled at the TV

"HUG HER!!! HUG HER!!!"

what the fuck is wrong with these people LOL

I saw every ep of trec tho and live it but I applaud the Orville's take on human space travel

That ep where Alara was thrown in charge and taking shots and all nervous - so f'n good. We've never seen someone crumble under pressure being thrust in command like this in trec - it was an awesome experience

Do we know which episode Frakes is directing? Looks like Saru in the Cpt's chair for sure, with Burnham to the right.

I think they are on episode 8 or 9 right now. I know he's filming 2 episodes again this season. Wanna say he's doing ep 2 and ep 9

I enjoy the Orville and hope they keep the more serious Sci fi tone. There have been some great story arcs, but then the other 75% of episodes, are like bad tng throwaways.

Before DSC was announced I was a big proponent of bringing in Seth McFarlane, to lead a new series(as a showrunner and creator). He's a huge fan and gets trek. I'm hopeful they get proper support at Hulu, and find there won identity.

Fun mistake, but it could be a Freudian slip imo. I think Orville has solidly found itself already.

I like action in my science fiction. But in Discovery, they don't bother to build up to the action so that it's exciting. In the first 10 minutes of discovery people are trying to kill each other and screaming.

Several eps later, the Harry Mudd ep, I didn't care for it.

Then Ash Tyler or Tyler Ash, whatever, the love interest, broke me. Someone I have no reason to care about is in love with someone I barely care about. Great time to introduce the love interest, script writers.
She looks like she could be gay. Shove that in there as fast as possible so nobody thinks she's gay.

Bah. Saddling your main character with a love interest while your character is still in flux and hasn't really won over the audience (for myself) doesn't work... and undercuts her strength because that writing indicates she's incomplete.

I'm sure I'll be much more interested in Orville because it doesn't have to compete with or try to be ST.

I might enjoy Discovery a bit more if it was its own thing, but still wouldn't watch it. Overall it's not lighthearted enough, and when it is it isn't well paced. Gotta have an action beat! Now we have a comedy beat! Now a humanizing moment, and back to action!

We like ST for what it was

They are ruining this with modern days over compensating woke-ness

Orville has none of this shit in it

Alara is a fun powerful female but deservedly and not shoved down our throats - and she's fallible

Nah, they can't ruin it.
As Rich notes, we've got seven seasons of TNG, DS9, VOY, and four of ENT.
I can be happy enough with that. There's no going home again. (Even though nothing's ever really gone.)

Trying to squeeze money from the IP, and making some fans happy while some are put off, is standard. I'm very used to the new things from old beloved properties being disappointing.

It is ruining it tho

New generations will ask

So what's all this Star Trek stuff about

And try to watch Discovery and go

Not even trying to find the good trek - the 90s prime trek

Well now, just remember, if you want to hook em in and show the first two seasons of TNG, they'll look at you like you're nuts.
Nowadays, DS9 would be more appropriate for today's audience. But probably still too cerebral, too much Star Trek-y stuff about morality.

This is what my brain wants from ST:
Intellectual, or oriented towards intellectuals
Morality plays.
Three act structure with bottle episodes.
Avoiding season long arcs.
Discovering new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has SHOOTING! WAR! MURDER! REVENGE! *humorous moment* RUNNING AND SHOUTING!

:D

Yes - the arcs

Actually DS9 did it good

But in Enterprise, season 3 pissed me off

Season 1,2 and 4 were all individual eps or at best 2-3 parters

But for season 3 they did the whole Archer saves the world from the Xindi thing, full season arc

it was horrible and worst of the series imo

Nobody ever mentions Archer but they have to make this new guy save the F'n earth???

f off

I don't worry about canon. If I did, so much more would be annoying. I wish the writers would worry less about canon tbh. Don't hobble the writing with that stuff.
If it weren't expected by the fans, a requirement, they wouldn't have to try to back-write everything so all the story details make sense and line up with everything that came before. That's almost impossible and shows glaringly most of the times they try.

Because Discovery follows the ST 2009 stuff, so the Romulans are gone, yes?
And the TNG films are canon which the Picard series is going to follow and Data dies in that stupid, stupid final TNG film. Nein!

You wish the writers didn't worry about canon ?!?!?!!?!??!!?!?!?!

That is why Discovery sucks so bad, they aren't trying to make this in tune with the ST universe. They have rediculous technology not seen in any other trek that took place after!!!

Canon is the major problem

SPORE DRIVE?!?!?!?!?!?! MUSHROOMS>!>!>!>!!

Yeah. The core issue
For myself the problem is really me.
I want ST to have certain things tonally and thematically, and that's just not what it's going to be, anymore.
I want it to look a certain way people don't want to see (soap opera, teevee look) and a have a feel to it that won't be coming back.
I have to accept that ST is no longer being made for a fan like me.
It's the same as how the TNG films weren't made for fans like me. Fans of the teevee show.

See, I can accept that there are going to be some new things that don't perfectly dovetail into the rest. It just depends on what things and how well written it is.
