Jonathan Frakes Is Pushing for Star Trek: Legacy: ‘They Can’t Deny the Fan Reaction’
JULY 31, 2023
BY BRAD LANG

Jonathan Frakes is very hopeful that Paramount will eventually greenlight Star Trek: Legacy. Per Variety, the Star Trek veteran threw his full support behind the spinoff idea pitched by Picard showrunner Terry Matales, insisting that there’s more than enough interest from fans to pursue the story.

“I think they can’t deny not only the fan reaction, but the fact that the numbers put the show at the Top 10 on the streaming charts. And that season of Star Trek: Picard was arguably among the best seasons of any Star Trek — I think we all agree on that,” Frakes explained. “I mean, Star Trek fans are loyal. It’s not millions and millions of people, and it’s not the youngest fandom in the world…”

Frakes, who has played the role of William Riker across several incarnations of Star Trek, further insisted that he has no doubts that Star Trek: Legacy will manifest in some form one day. “I am an eternal optimist, and I believe in a perfect world, they will find the assets and the energy and hire Terry to put together this Legacy show and that will, in fact, come to fruition,” the actor concluded.

What is Star Trek: Legacy?
Originally pitched on social media by Matales, Star Trek: Legacy was envisioned as a continuation of The Next Generation set after the events of Picard. The Paramount+ series, which saw most of the TNG cast reprise their respective roles for Season 3, concludes with a one-year time jump ostensibly setting the stage for another series as Captain Seven of Nine takes command of the U.S.S. Enterprise-G alongside Jack Crusher, Picard’s son, embarking on his assignment in the field.

Matales has insisted that there are currently no plans to develop Star Trek: Legacy, insisting that Paramount has enough series in the works as it is. Despite this, many fans have encouraged the showrunner to pursue the idea further.

Star Trek: Picard is currently streaming on Paramount+.
I dunno, I'm pretty sure they can deny it. I want the show, but we now know how fucking idiotic these streaming networks are.

Well put, I don´t understand why they never continued where Voyager/Nemesis ended.
That's what they should do. I think they like trying to explore different eras because it doesn't butt into tom rights issues, and they have less rules and canon to follow, but I think they have kinda learned that doesn't matter.

I think there is a decent chance after the strikes are resolved, we could hear something about Legacy. You have to remember they finished filming season 3 of Picard almost 2 years ago, and the network clearly didn't realize the big hit they had on hand. The rest of Picard had been a mess, made during a Pandemic, during a turbulent time with the network. We also have Discovery ending as the marquee series, so that will leave room in the budget for a big new show

If they're sensible it should happen, especially with Discovery being chopped, but Hollywood execs are strange folk.

That's modern Star Trek for you. Everything is complex and far reaching. It may have been more prudent for Worf, or whoever first broached the subject of TOS Klingon appearance, to break the fourth wall, look into the camera and say "The studio did not have enough money for Klingons in The Original Series. This is how we have always looked." And left it at that.
I agree with that. There didn’t need to be a canonical explanation. They could simply have ignored how Klingons looked in TOS, and acted like they had Worf’s appearance the whole time. Everyone would have understood that.
Instead, they had to make the canon more complex than it ever needed to be. It was the wrong decision.

You know because Vulcans are longer lived and several times stronger every human fucking skank would try get with them lol.

Star Trek never needed to be complex. It really may help to get back to the basics: vibrant background lighting, romulans, whimsical wizards, sexual tension, and Finnegan.

I have only seen a couple episodes of TOS. But that DS9 episode is absolutely brilliant. Just a really fun episode.

That, and Move Along Home.

J/k about Move Along Home.

DS9 had great episodes where the writers took the show to places that TNG would never dream of. Places TNG clearly should have went.

The Enemy Within (I'm Captain Kirk!), Dagger of the Mind, Balance of Terror, Shore Leave, The Squire of Gothos (Q), Arena, Space Seed, The Devil in the Dark, Errand of Mercy, and The City on the Edge of Forever are all top tier season 1 TOS episodes.

Then there are other all-time Star Trek classics like Amok Time, Journey to Babel, A Piece of the Action, The Ultimate Computer, Spectre of the Gun, Plato's Stepchildren, The Way to Eden (totally far out space hippies).

TNG writers were hamstrung by Gene, and then by Micheal Pillar and Rick Bermans, refusing to move on from Gene's ethos of no conflict in the crew. The DS9 team were largely left alone by season 3, because everyone else's attention was focused on launching Voyager, allowing Ira Steven Behr to take DS9s writer's room to new heights.

Pillar, Berman, and Behr had great ideas here and there, but lacked consistency. Blaming that on Roddenberry sounds like an excuse. Why do you think that none of these producers produced a brand new sci-fi show of their own that rivaled the popularity of Star Trek? They needed Roddenberry, Roddenberry did not need them.

Roddenberry, along with Nimoy, Meyer, and Bennett built the foundations of Star Trek. People of all age groups watched their products.

If the current Star Trek writers stayed within Roddenberry’s Star Trekian vision, more people in more age groups would watch it, and Paramount would make more money.

That is not to say that Roddenberry never stifled Star Trek’s progression. He abandoned TOS during it’s third and final season and fell face first when given the opportunity to produce the big movie.

Nevertheless, Star Trek lost an irreplaceable creative element when The Great Bird of the Galaxy boldly flew to where no one has gone before.

Yeah, I have seen some of those TOS episodes. They were good. It’s just that the show looks so incredibly dated that it really takes me out of it.

Damn, season 2 of Strange new worlds is already over. Pretty good finale, but they just had to leave it on a cliffhanger. With the strikes going on, it likely won't be coming out until late 24 or even 2025. Overall it was a good season, not quite as strong as season 1, but still a great effort.

SNW is pretty good.

only on episode 7 of the first season and this feels like Star Trek. Dude playing Spock’s grown on me quite a bit, Romijn’s acting is a bit shit at times, and really like Uhura, Pike, & Singh. Hell, like the whole cast really.

As a big sci fi fan, I have to say the best recent show was Dark Matter

Enjoyed Dark Matter as well, shame it got cancelled when it did.

The Expanse is pretty good if you haven’t checked it out already.

Really the show did pretty much do what Gene mentioned, not directly but it makes enough of a joke of the situation that its clearly playing to fan knowledge of the reality of makeup changes in an episode which itself is all about comic references.
