I really like Pike and the actor playing him too. Nice casting. More interesting than Michael.

The key issue of the series. Nobody likes or cares about Burnham. SMG is not a very good actress unfortunately and has like three facial expressions. Burnham is generally perceived as a bit annoying.

The other key issue is the pacing. Too much happens and lots of things don't make sense.

If they gave their episodes more time to play out or would not push so much into one episode, and got rid of Burnham, I think Discovery would be much better. Both Anson Mount and Jason Isaacs have done an absolutely tremendous job.

Definitely gonna watch that. Especially about the Dax thing. That series deserved a movie but I don't know how popular it would be.

I was wondering this last night, who is better, Data or Spock? Who would you rather have as your #1? I know Data wasn't #1 but let's compare them, I think Data is kinda based on Spock anyway.

Data's clear advantages are physical strength, libraries of knowledge and speed in going through information. He beats Spock in that his mind is a bigger library than Spock's. But Spock is still a repository of wisdom. Who is the better problem solver? Data can often roam his memory banks and find a solution that may work but Spock can think on his feet. He is intuitive and picks up things that Data doesn't even know exist. Like this one time Spock had to get them off a planet on a shuttle quickly. He has a Sherlock Holmes or Dexter quality to him.

What I think really gives Spock the victory here is his mental powers. Mind melding. Other shit. Very useful. I think mind melding easily puts Spock over Data. I take Spock.

Going back and watching the TOS I am really starting to like Kirk too. He may be the best captain. That is such a tough one.

Don't count out Data's non-organic factor. A number of times he was the only one not affected by some weird thing or another which messed with all of the biological members of the crew. Granted you could respond that he is affected by things that organic crew members aren't but he's the odd man out in that case. Some weird psychedelic effect comes along that affects the crew? Data is immune leaving you an immensely capable officer to try and clean stuff up. Some weird technological effect comes around which affects Data? You still have the rest of your crew. If Spock was your first officer you'd be left with a whole crew suffering from whatever it is in the first case. Oh, also, Data isn't going to get ultra horny every few years and mess everything up..

I'd pick Data. Spock's organic nature makes him the same liability the rest of the crew is, his mind powers could be replaced by other Vulcans or Batazoids or something, and while he may have a bit more of the intuitive human factor going for him, he's just not as "smart" as Data. On top of that, Data can directly interface with technology when necessary.

"Laws are for lackeys, context is for kings." Best line of the series and I totally agree with it. Context is when kings are made. When they step outside the rules at the right time.

Good points. I was just watching an episode where Spock was almost killed by a poisonous plant and McCoy barely saved his life.

IRL, I think Data would get a dishonorable discharge. lol. He has taken over the ship and possessed too many times. You can't trust the guy. lol. But you make a very good point about Data always being the last guy standing when everyone else is out and need help.

Yeah, that is the problem with Data... When your first officer is basically a supercharged tricorder you never know who's going to be pushing the buttons. Then again, they keep putting up with holodecks and transporters and how many times have those things caused catastrophic problems? The Federation has a remarkable tolerance for tech that turns on them.

Spock's a good choice. Data is still my #1.

I wonder who would win in a fight - Data or Odo? Hrm...

A good example and episode I was just thinking of was when Data had to hide what really happened from the rest of the crew or they would be killed by aliens. The aliens basically didn't want witnesses so them and Data had to wipe their minds and rig shit. Data has to lie to all the crew to save them.

That's actually the one I was thinking about. There is also the one where people can't sleep due to some anomaly and, while Data isn't the one who saves the crew, he is the only one not affected and catches other peoples' mistakes. He's also the one who interfaced with the Borg collective and made the whole sleep option possible...

His technological nature causes some problems but it also affords unique opportunities. Neat character.

Seriously - after Voyager basically revealed they've created a whole slave class of sentient beings that has rebelled against their biological creators I bet the Federation STILL uses them in the new Picard spinoff! Barkley just has to have his wank sessions or he'll just keep getting more weird...

That was a good episode if it is the one I am thinking about. Star Trek always has strong writing. The one where the robots kept fighting the humans' war long after the humans died. They just fight because they were programmed to. They are fighting in the name of their creators.

It's a recurring theme in Voyager. Obviously with the doctor becoming sentient it's a major theme, but it crops up a few other times. There is the episode where B'elanna and the Doctor end up on a ship where the assistant hologram went wacky and killed the whole crew (good episode - Revulsion, season 4, I believe). Then there is the one with the the Hirogen using holotechnology for training to the point where their simulations become sentient and rebel... Then there's the whole photonic race (not really holodeck creations, but still holograms after a fashion) that goes to war with Paris' Captain Proton simulation....

They had some highs and lows with the holodeck and, more broadly, holographic technology in Star Trek... Really they should have shut it down long ago and stuck to 3D chess. That never got anyone killed.

I also prefer Spock as my #1 but it’s close. Data wasn’t a commander for a reason tho, I trust Picards’ judgement.

Ira Steven Berh decided after the premiere in LA, that he wanted to have the whole film in HD instead of just select scenes. They restored the original 35mm film into HD and redid the special effects which is a very expensive and timely process. He actually helped fund the full HD job himself, because he wanted it to be perfect.

Backers can stream stream it for 99 hours starting April 25th. Fathom events will have a one night showing of What We Left Behind in select U.S. theaters for one day only on May 13. Currently they have a fairly large release of atiubf 1000 theaters. Some are on sale right now, with the rest going on sale Friday. My local theater is actually already 80% sold, so that's a good sign. At the end of the film they will reveal when the backers will get there perks

There has been some rumblings for a while, that CBS is considering having Mount lead the Star Fleet academy series. I'd be all for it, because it work as a spin off. Any new mainline trek series, I really think they need to do post TNG, around when the Picard series is happening.
 
They put all the feelz in tonights episode. Are we getting a full retcon or canon correction????


I HIGHLY advise anyone who hasn't watched the Short trek episodes, do so now. At least 2 of them have major implications for the series.
 
Thoughts? Grievances? Personally i can't wait..uber fan of tng..needed a fix and started deep space nice...
